Hey bats!
I’m new to FFXIV from World of Warcraft and wanted to share why I ended up leaving, either temporarily or permanently, from Shadowlands, the latest WoW Expansion.
I go into detail story-wise as to why I left, but also included tidbits like gameplay. I think it’s important when criticizing to say what I’d do differently, so I did so in this video.
As usual, I stumble over my words, it’s just how I am. Also my lighting is off today. Whoops!
One correction I wanted to make is: Blood elves and void elves should SHARE styles, not all blood elf stuff goes to void elves. I think I implied it but not heavily enough. Blood elves SHOULD 100% get all void elf styles without the tentacles if void elves get stuff from blood elves. Equal exchange. Figured that’d be evident from me being a horde/Blood Elf player, but you know how some won’t see that.

(I'm not a high elf fan, and I actually hate them. Also don't get along with many members of their community. Not applicable to all, of course, but have had super bad experiences with their toxicity. Even so, I don't care if options are shared. )
I personally thought that the zones were good, like I loved Revendreth, the gothic feel of it, Vampires. Right up my alley, then you had Ardenweald, I loved the fairies and pixies there cause they reminded me of Irish folklore and I liked that. Maldraxxus was good too and Bastion was… okay, it wasn't BAD persay. What really started to bug me though, was when we were forced to rescue story characters that I despised, made me remember stuff like 'Oh yeah! I hate these guys…. why am I doing this again? Why can't I just leave them in Torghast? Or why can't I at least tell them to get fucked?' Beyond that, Torghast was fun the first few times you run it, after which it gets absolutely boring.
What annoys me is that my favorite faction, the Horde, got screwed over by Blizz in the form of Thrall and Baine, and I was forced to save them, and it reminded me of BfA, and why I hated the story. Add to that that I simply didn't have fun anymore because RP seemed to be slowly dieing more and more. And unless you were singing koombayah around a campfire, be ready to become a social pariah in this game.
But that was only the straw that broke the camels back, beyond that you had instances like 'You think you do… but you don't.' – 'What! Don't you guy have phones?!' – 'Blitz Chung incident' – 'The thousand or so layoffs to give the CEO a raise' – 'WC3: Refunded' to just name a few things that made me loose faith in this company.
For example: I had no problem with the Night Elves being butchered, after all, if you live in a glorified treehouse: Do not piss off the dudes with torches. And that is exactly what they did, with their assault on Tanaris to aid the Alliance with their ongoing attack against civilian miners. If they had kept their noses out of the conflict, Teldrassil would still stand. A couple of racist elves less, honestly, I do not care about them.
I was perfectly fine with the Faction War, I just hate how Blizz retconned Sylvanas to turn her into a moustache twirling villain to make the Horde the bad guys again, when it was the ALLIANCE who started the war, NOT the Horde. And it pisses me off, they had a perfect chance to make Genn the bad guy, which he was, he has attacked the Horde in Legion unprovoked, but Blizz would have us forget that little tidbit, even adding a small side-quest in a later patch to retcon the fact that Genn attacked unprovoked, cause you know… HORDE BAD!
Fuck Blizzard.
Blizz sells the Horde fantasy both ways. They are a group of alien genocidal invaders and undead monsters; and yet still think of themselves as noble outcasts thanks to the Tauren and later Belfs. It doesn't work because a group like that would never stick together. And if it does stick together thanks to writer fiat, you have a situation where players that think of themselves as noble outcasts are unhappy when the other half of the Horde acts out their villainous nature. The Alliance really doesn't have that issue outside of occasionally clashing ideologies between the Nelfs and everyone else. Speaking of the overall factions of course, individuals would not stick to the faction/racial archetypes.
I hear a lot of speculation about Blizz making The Light an enemy for an upcoming xpac… which would be incredibly dumb. Say what you will about balance being all the rage with self styled "creatives" these days, but what Alliance players that remain that care about the lore will revolt. If Y'rel showed up in a space convertible with shades and said "hey, lets go on a light crusade against XYZ", and XYZ wasn't the pinnacle of a self sacrificing noble soul with a purity none could deny…. every Alliance player would happily go along with it rather that fight it lol. "Light crusade? Sign me up" is what they would say lol!
