A Casual's Perspective on WoW: Shadowlands

A casual’s perspective on the general state of World of Warcraft Shadowlands after 213 hours in the new expansion. Instead of looking at this amazing MMO from the perspective of an expert, this critique is focused on the experience any newcomer to the game might have with their first couple hundred hours of play. So if you think the fact that I don’t participate in Mythic plus, rated pvp, or non-LFR raids somehow invalidates my opinions about the game, then I totally understand where you’re coming from. Unfortunately, it also looks like the vast majority of the WoW playerbase also doesn’t participate in those activities since at best 40% of accounts even try normal raiding. As such, this is my attempts to justify why 60% of the player base doesn’t try to complete ‘difficult’ content, and what they might be doing instead.

  1. I wish I got into WOW when I was younger. Sadly I was stuck with Runescape ahaa. Good video as always!

P.s – What's your opinion on Kingdom's of Amalur? Is it something you'd look at?

  2. Just awesome video! I have taken a quite big break from wow because none of my friends played wow "Casually" so I always needed to grind gear to get to the "real" game with them. Meaning that defeating LFG Raid was stupid and you haven't even started the game but in my mind leveling a character to max and passing Raids to know the story was good enough. Your video gave me motivation to start Shadowlands and just solo content that I want to do 🙂 Thank you!

  3. Just want to say this was absolutely an amazing video that I just finished watching twice.

Basically, this meant a lot more to me than just 'what game to play' because of the massive sentimental value of this game to me and kind of the phase in my life I am in right now. I feel much safer/more validated to play in a not-life-destroying way.

I am kind of astounded at how well you structured everything, you always had my 100% attention, and that's not normal for me. It was almost like you were in my head in terms of what I wanted to hear, except you had such amazing insight and some compelling ways to look at this game I had never even come close to thinking about. ALL while also catching me up on the new mechanics/systems.

God, I could seriously rant more, but this was such a great way to break down what this game means to a person, what it could mean to a person, and just what they're getting into or out of it. I have been researching for weeks but this video made me decide I'd love to revisit this world as a much needed refuge from my stressful work life, as a means to accommodate some of my mental illness, and also as an avenue for creative inspiration for how they build the world, lore, and game mechanics.

Thank you so much for doing this. You're brilliant, have a razor sharp philosophical and critical thinking way of getting to the heart of things in an engaging and interesting way, and this was really one of the best videogame video essays I've ever watched/listened to.

  4. For anyone that wants my opinion about the current state of Shadowlands in 9.1 I feel the need to share the fact that I've just unsubscribed to the game for the first time in several years.

Not only was the content draught between 9.0 unbearably long, but the amount of rewarding content in the newest patch just couldn't keep my interest any longer than the two weeks I ended up putting into the game. From a top tier raiders perspective (From PreachGaming), the game is currently in such a brokenly unfair state of RNG that its no longer fun for the majority of hardcore players. Meanwhile, from a casual's perspective there is a decided lack of any grinds that I personally found worthwhile in the game considering how boring the newest end game area named Korthia feels to play in. Add to this the current Blizzard lawsuit about harassments and discrimination in the workplace and suddenly the game is not only something I'm not interested in playing right now, but also a product that belongs to a company that I don't want to support at the moment.

Currently, I can only really recommend the game as a fun diversion to players who haven't made their way through the last 3 expansions before. But for anyone who has made their way through the majority of end game content up until this point and would find them selves exploring the new 9.1 stuff….I'd just recommend waiting. There's a reason why Preach, Asmongold, Madseason, Bellular, and Pint have all taken a step back from WOW in the last couple weeks, and without the content creators that build up hype for the game, its an even more lacking experience. Rest In Peace World of Warcraft, because I sincerely hope that it will improve again to the point where I might want to come back, both in their business practices as well as the game world we all know and love.

  5. I'm a casual player, and I've had fun playing WoW off and on over the years. The only problem is I'm a collector. Even if I don't use the things I collect, I still like collecting them. In WoW, there's always things I can't collect as a casual player, so I ultimately lose interest and quit. It's like what's the point in collecting if I can't complete the collection? That's just me though. Based on the stats there's a lot of people that are fine just going through the story or other goals they can do casually. But for me, I'm never able to play for long knowing I won't be able to get everything.
