Metzen was there when Burning Crusade threw Illidan and Kael Th'as under the bus, which in turn made Wrath somewhat disconnected because those guys had connections with Arthas that Frozen Throne set up for a rematch. But nope, just the former two fell into madness and they pulled a Starcraft to keep the Lich King relevant ("Without its master…"). He tried to make it up with Legion, but that just felt like a Hail Mary gone too far.

    And he helmed the infamously bad Starcraft 2 storyline. And taking off the nostalgia glasses, you find out Brood War was a well-executed mess of a story.

    And then Diablo 3 was just non-sense.

    The problem with Metzen is that he is great with initial themes, lore and setting up characters, but without a supporting writer to keep him together, he forgets those themes and the plot drives the story, rather than the characters. He just ends up writing the same story over and over.

    This was a long rant, but as a Blizzard fanboy of the pre-BC lore of Blizzard, watching it collapse like this was just sad.

    Bringing him back feels like nostalgia bait.
