It’s crazy how much have Overwatch been through with all this.
This might be more attributed to the Chinese government warning/forcing NetEase not to renew their contract with Activision/Blizzard because China is suffering from a systemic youth problem and slowing economy right now. Thanks to a combination of their 1-Child rule back in the 1970's and 80's and now there are more seniors than there are 20 and 30 somethings who have seen a boom in the 90's and early 2000's have now given up on aspirations and life as the economy has slowed down significantly over the last few years and the unemployment rate has skyrocketed to nearly 20% in the last year alone.
Many of Chinese youth are spending their time at home or internet cafe's playing games like LoL, WoW, Diablo, OW2, etc.
I think the government is trying to dissuade any distractions or influence this trend might be having.
Time to get out of 🇨🇳
So glad blizzard's paying after what happened with the Hong Kong situation
Guess that means Chinese New Year is canceled LOL
Could not care less, it always involves people's bank accounts that ruins the entertainment purpose for all to enjoy.
So no 2023 Lunar New Year event?
Remember when people got angry at Blizzard for not making Mei a Chinese human right activist or showing any sign of boycott (including banning the Chinese team on OWL) during the Hong Kong crisis?
Plot twist…They removed Mei because she's a Chinese hero?
Maybe it will be the beginning of Blizzard dealing with India instead? They are already in a partnership with NODWIN gaming since 2020…
Its is hilarious when blizzard started the skummy in game purchases for overwatch, then gets their game removed from a huge market, that is well deserved for Blizzard. But many content creaters in China will be effected by this and my account that I spent thousands on will be unusable is frustrating.
The "operating principles" in question literally have to do with the "inclusivity" aspects.
My guess is that Blizzard is dealing with some internal woke pressure to keep things as they are, and not change things up o appease the Chinese government requirements.
Blizzard needs to make a decision: pander to the (to borrow from you) "woke weirdos", or do business as they have been.
I anticipate they'll try to appease, find it's bad business, and they'll cave to the Chinese alterations that are demanded, and Blizzard employees will make a lot of noise about human rights and what-not.
Throw this into the mix with the Microsoft acquisition, what a time to be alive at blizzard lmao
We’ll for 1 china government has absolutely no principles and for 2 even if blizzard is loosing china the players could only play for like an hour a day anyway! Lol
Yea, I can see why people would leave China. No freedoms. I wonder what other games they banned?
Seems like karma is finally coming round to bite them in the butt
Lol compared to neteast blizzard looks like a saint. Neteast Mobil games are literal pay to win micro transactioned BS. So it might be that neteast wanted either a bigger cut or more input into games monetizations.
Sucks for the players in China that enjoy the game, but Blizzard 100% deserves this for mistreating the playerbase with their predatory practices. It'll be funny to see them back pedal on their prices after this assuming they get desperate.
lolz
They finally added too many black people for China to tolerate the game anymore.
Well atless if the overwatch dev increase the price we can just use this as their exhaust be better overwatch 2 new dev be better
That's fine just bank on Korea instead. And Idk if you really want to live in China anyway so if you want another reason to get out there now you have it.
Own by Tencent, banned in China. Ironic
Good, now bring back loot boxes
as a chinese player i am very disappointed. Many chinese players love overwatch. All of us love it, especially the 2016 summer, we think it is the best memory in our mind. And if Blizzard decides to change its partner company in China…because of policy reasons, ow will still be closed for a long time (at least 1-2years)until it is approved again. 😭😭😭😭
Don't put the blame on the government. In fact, Blizzard staff in China have revealed that it was due to a stupid decision by someone at Blizzard. CEO bobby, without a doubt. He is known to want to make more from this if he is fired. From the disclosure of conditions, Blizzard's requirements are a bit unreasonable. If you want to know, you can search for it in related news.
I got a big smile on my face too 🙂
Russia and Belarus: "Welcome to the club"
I read only 3 percent of revenue came from China. So they won't be losing much. Not defending blizzard I'm just saying
What I wish we were able to know was what exactly led to the disagreement. I don't buy the 'principles' nonsense for a moment — especially in light of the recent CCP crackdown on MMOs, like you said. I think the CCP has an issue with Blizzard, and not the other way around.
We my never know, but the length of the renewal period is important. If we're talking a 5 year renewable contract or something, it could be that the CCP never liked Overwatch to begin with. If it's an annual contract, then I would bet on the OW2 monetization system. Sad that we may never know.
China can't decide between making money on one of the biggest and fastest growing entertainment industries and just making all their citizens hate them. Though I'd be happy if the Chinese government outright said "Yeah this game's economy is too greedy. Fix it or don't sell it here."
This might not be a problem solved until after the Microsoft acquisition. Activision Blizzard really needs to get acquired quick at this rate. All their company heads seem doomed to sink the entire ship at this rate.
What about the Chinese OWL teams :0 they are ded now
Maybe this will force the company to go back to the "Want to make a sale, make a good product and not microtransaction garbage". Doubt it, but I can dream. Honestly this needed to happen so Blizzard can start seeing in a tangible sense the consequences of relying on the Chinese market instead of making a product genuinly good with mass global appeal.
Tencent owns a lot of blizzard actions and tencent is chinese, does this Meana the end of blizzard?
Sigma China.
Well lets be honest they pull soldier 76 being gay outta their asses for attention and nothing else. I for one would love them to remove it for american audiences and focus on making their game.
Well blizzard, was it worth to appease the ccp.
All of that China pandering and for what?
It’s honestly ironic after blizzard has shilled for China all these years.
Free hong kong revolution of our times
This is the WOKE company that sucked China's Deeek for so long that they thought they had China in the bag. Heh…
Overwatch should die. It’s an abomination.
now they came to asian server via vpn, and i don't like that
I think Blizzards would realize how bad being greedy will lead them to a darker future and this is the proof.
