Kungen is an OG World of Warcraft Tank main, at one point he was one of the most known tanks in the game, in this video he talks about World of Warcraft’s downfall, and considering that this is a 6 year old video, it’s impressive how much of it still rings true today.

  1. Calling them WoW "Expansions" feels like a misnomer at this point due to the lack of evergreen content. Rather than expanding the game, it replaces the content you'll be doing for the next two years. The only content that came before will only be done when leveling up through it and that is only a mere fraction of that content.

There's also the problem of having the bulk of the previous expansions' story being told in the old end game which a lot of new players will not do if their goal is to progress all the way to the current end game, thus leading to very fractured story telling. You're better off just watching a video of someone summarizing the previous expansions' stories to get caught up rather than trying to drag some of your friends through the old end game just so you can experience the story.

  2. FFXIV has this problem though i dont really consider this a problem … some days im there in my fc house just chilling listening to the good tunes and selling shit on the MB do my daily roulettes i dont always do them … and basically what i do with any other mmo theres never enough RPG content to fulfill everyone so yeah i mean i play a game for what it is and expect it to be what it is i dont come in like oh it doesnt have this and that and be like wow this sucks no… just play it for what it is … enjoy the game for what it is… ffxiv is fun yes end game can be boring its more about look at me glam glam and im a sucker for this myself, but u have fun doing it i guess. Housing is very fun in ffxiv, but its hard to get a house in ffxiv 😛 a lot of mmo games i find all need fine tuning man… but honestly i use to be a guy that just played JRPG games like turn based games or monster hunter and souls games man … so coming to a mmo i think is cool its like a huge RPG game to me and its awesome it was like how diablo II and other ARPG games where u play mostly solo but can play with other people online thats how i look at world of warcraft and FFXIV and other mmo it is what it is man. Whats nice about mmo games u can always play it and have something to do … most games growing up u beat it u unlock everything that u can complete it fully and put it away… and maybe play it back again few years later if u have will power to do so… i mean its a game man what do u expect more ? WoW looks like a good mmo game i just don't play it cause im very sicken of blizzard as a company so i just dont play any of their games and also i dont think i can run these games on linux anyhow. FFXIV works amazing on linux and to me thats freaking cool.

  3. That video was half "back in my day" boomer talk and another half of actually good points. I did not even know there was a point in time when WoW wasn't 90% barren wasteland and 10% endgame raiding (maybe exaggerating, maybe not).

I cannot, however, bring myself to agree that flying mounts and teleports are terrible. The only time I can justify slowly trekking through a zone is worth my time is if it's an important portion of the actual content (i.e. flight sims, walking simulators). Not when it was clearly placed there just to be arbitrary padding on my play time while I'm just trying to get from content A to content B.

Edit: How appropriate that he's playing BDO instead. That's the kind of game that you can literally hardcore no-life grind for decades (even with the p2w boosts).

  4. You didn't get his point, he's not looking to evolve forever or what not. He loved vanilla just because he was able to play the game and do stuffs all over the world he even said that raiding is bad even if he's one of the guru's of raiding and he's right about that. Nowadays blizzard forces you to play the game and buy game time with all their shity systems but back then people used to play a lot because they loved the game and there was always something to do.

  5. I don't think that is the problem with retail at all. Rather it's when the content becomes unplayable garbage (enter arenas and PvP as a whole) or when blizz just throws this mountain of mandatory BS for you to grind before you can actually play what you want to play, which has been the case since borrowed power was introduced in legion. Players actually want to do all there is to end-game because the content is good unironically, they're just thrown off tracks when you tell them oh you gotta grind legendaries and conduits and AP and all that bs they don't give af about.

Like take the bad exp that did not have borrowed power ergo WoD. Raids were awesome and everyone that shits on the exp that actually played will aknowledge that. PvP was ass because we came from the exp that had the best PvP in the history of the game, but boy I'd bet ya everyone would rather play WoD arenas than the current shit show without thinking for half a second. and even though the overall exp was so mediocre there still was the alts replayability I literally got every class to max lvl in WoD because that was pretty much all there was to the expansion.

  6. He's ranting about WoW while playing BDO. =/
I'm not saying that he's wrong about WoW, because he isn't. WoW sucks. But BDO isn't a good game.
I don't know how it was back in 2016, but these days BDO is P2W garbage.

  7. The game Kungen was playing was Black Desert. That game is fun, but has its own issues. I also has no flying mounts, no teleporting. It has some pay-to-win issues in its open world, so it's definitely not for everyone. I enjoy it well enough, but the lack of in-game cosmetics might put off a lot of people.

  8. Oh ya, because the average player is a mythic raider… this is such a narrow point of view. Some of his points are good, but he's still in a very niche part of the game. The average raiding guild will take 2-3 weeks to clear normal, then 4+ weeks to clear Heroic…

  9. WoW offers raiding, at any difficulty you want to do it as, mythic+, open world questing, and pvp. Whenever they try to put other systems into the game, the raiders complain (because they grind the crap out of the new systems in order to get BiS) and the system is abandoned.

The sad reality is that, WoW players are getting what we deserve, as we let the vocal minority pressure Blizzard to give them what they want (but of course after they get it they express that that isn't what they wanted). We also let content creators spin narratives about the game that most of us just parrot, even if we know they aren't true.

Personally, I like covenants far more than just regular talent trees. But, hey, we are getting the old style, many choices talent trees back (but really there will be only on right way to fill out the trees) and people are going to complain about them. Arm chair designers always ruin live service games, and that is a fact.

  10. Game is trash because it not make me play 24/7
Game trash because it not force people to pvp
Game trash because they add certain convenience for people

    Well thats certainly a take

  11. Yeah but no. If we old player try to turn back time the games will return to pre-wow numbers. WoW was innovative because it was easy. Hard compared to other genres but not to compared to other mmos. Eventually their raids got to be the best on the market sure but the initial player explosion was because it was the only top 5 mmo where you could level to cap alone. Many games you couldn't even get xp solo because mobs that gave xp were higher then your level.

That made a much higher number of players give the genre a shot. I loved ffxi. It was my game. But 90% of my friends in the game quit because they were tired of the game being a chore. Not having access to things is a chore. So they quit. They played wow. They hit cap and raided in a month not 3.

The market has expanded and fractured. Player won't chose a game that forces them to crawl when they can run in another one. The people who do stay will be dedicated but they will make up a very small total population.

  12. I'm so glad that WoW has moved on from the old RPG style content like "farming herbs" for 3 weeks that's considered content. People have moved on, the game has modernised, we don't want to waste our time doing completely unfun grinds like reputations. We want to play the game because the combat is stellar in WoW. M+ has revolutionised the game and it's way better off for doing so. Classic is there for the people that like the boring unrewarding grinds, I'll stick to improving at skill based gameplay.

  13. The amount of dumb takes as comments here makes it fucking obvious why wow is a soulless game, what a bunch of retards.
"I dont wanna go back to unrewarding grinding/farming" motherfucker how did you miss his point! That wasn't the point of the video! The point was in vanilla you were going out in the world, interacting with ppl, raiding if you wanted to, etc, after that just like ffxiv, sit around to fucking queue awayyyyyyyyyyyy, the most boring experience ever in a fucking mmo!!!!

  14. Sorry but flying wasn't what killed the server communities, battlegroup dungeon finder did. If they had just made the group finder be based on your own server, this would never of happened. Because you would have still been grouping up with people you would see in the open world and cities. You would have added those people, because naturally being put in groups with the same people would mean your play times naturally aligned. this is from a pve perspective, I don't give two craps about pvp

  15. Well Kungen knows what he is talking about, and its like i use to say, game devs are like TV/movie producers, they listen to the people that screams the loudest…the wokes and then make shit movies that noone wants to watch. In the game industry its the same but its the casuals screaming, so the game devs adapts their game to be casual friendly witch ends up beeing a game that noone wants not even the casuals, like retail wow where you get max lvl in like 3 hours and then full epic 30 minutes later. The funs lasts for like 4 hours and it dosnt feel rewarding like a hard game of elden ring. Blizzard has totaly forgotten how to make players feel rewarded deeply, feeling that you had to fight hard to get a reward, its raining xp and epics from the skies and like you say about the flying mount, it takes away the epic:ness feeling of how big the world is. They need to get back to the basics, vanilla wow was awesome for a reason
