From my personal experience as a PVE player but also in general I can recommend these:
Vanilla: TurtleWoW (if you don't mind custom features this is in my opinion the best Vanilla server since they have content originally made by Blizzard but removed during the alpha version of WoW)
TBC: None currently except TBC Classic
WotLK: Warmane (Frostmourne)
Cataclysm: None currently (wait for Sunwell's Maelstrom)
MoP: Stormforge (Mistblade)
WoD: None
Legion: None currently (wait for Tauri)
BfA: None (unless you want to play on Russian servers)
Shadowlands: Retail is the best of course, but if you want to try it on a private server then Firestorm
so let me tell you why ascension is said to be the best its cuz they use a wrath of the lich king launcher and updated graphics with classless options and even a random ability hero its called draft and also the last reason is it follows no specific expansion it just tries to be unique almost like they trying to make wow a different game and there marketing is top notch .

Turtle WoW booming atm 1500k players on avg and goes up to 2.5k +
Freakz has been around Wotlk my friend … I joined that server when it had 200 players at peak 😀

BFA to trture myself??? Wtf next to WOTLK the BFA was one of the best expansions ever i fucking enjoyed it especially raids.
Avoid WOW FREAKZ, everything is broken there. They only focus on latest dungeons and maps, and the rest of expansions are like 90% bugged when come to questing, achievements 🙂
I'm curious if Shadowlands on Firestorm have many bugged quests 🙂 for a 2x srv should everything work almost perfectly.
im looking for a true wrath of the lich king server that gives the full old school experience from vanilla through tbc into wrath. are there any that do that or do they all just focus on one expansion and leave the rest of the game to be buggy and unfinished?

Firestorm Shadowlands is a mess. I cant even get beyond their sign in process. I cant sign up. And this is even after a merger with Freakz Shadowlands where they stated i can use my existign log in to play on Firestorm. Nope. Wont work. I get sent into loops. I try my log in from freakz. Firestorm tells me that no such account exists. I try the password reset option since it does see my email but then the captcha refuses to work telling me to be a human. New sign up process also does not work. Forget Firestorm Shadowlands and play retail.

Felsong legion is up now. Well scripted. I played a druid and all quests worked in the zones. Suramar is only partially scripted and that is as far as you can get. Dungeons work, pvp works.
