Hey everyone, in this video I cover the birth of Warcraft private servers. WoW has been one of my favorite games for a long time now and with the release of Shadowlands it had me thinking back to some of my favorite emulators and private servers throughout the years. Did you know that WoW had private servers out before the game even released? Our story starts with Skull, a hacker known for making botting programs, eventually getting his hands on the alpha version of WoW and releasing it to the public. Then Lax, another bot maker taking up the reigns and publishing Stormcraft, the very first world of warcraft private server. It was extremely barebones, but it worked and for the first time in MMORPG history, players would get to explore azeroth.
Music from Grizzly Hills zone in WoW, cinematic is the Shadowlands cinematic, all rights and properties belong to Blizzard Entertainment.

What was your first private server? What was your favorite? Mine was Kronos 3
nice video mate !
I remember when I got the Alpha client in 2003 on a DVD and thought it was a hoax, but it was actually the real deal. Haven't heard names such as "Stormcraft" since a very long time.
I'm since 15 years in the private server scene and enjoy to watch the progress. I started my first public server in June 2006, managed to be one of the first Vanilla servers which required no client-sided hackpatch, started one of the first working TBC realms in March 2007 and opened Outland in December 2007 (Being one of the first servers with working Outland after lots of sniffing, you can still see the opening video on my YT channel). We opened a well scripted ZA mid-2008 (There are still vids as well).
I claimed the title "World first Wotlk server" in May 2008, months before the actual release of Wotlk. Me and TOM_RUN managed to get a basic server working 23 hours after the Alpha client leak 😀 TBC reached in the meanwhile 4-digit player counts, stable with days of uptime (Most open-source cores back then would crash often even with 100 people online). The TBC realm with its char DB from 2006 is still online and the
oldestintact private server.I've participated since then in a dozen of pserver projects, my biggest drama happened in 2017 on Elysium Project (I assume you have heard about it). I was close to leaving the scene.
Anyway, really enjoyed your video I'm glad that someone took the time to make a video about the beginning of private servers. I really miss those "WoWEmu" times when basically 50% of the content was totally broken, scripting was done in text files, yet players had lots of fun 🙂
Wow, that's a pretty good video man, lots of good history in here.
Floater Army never dies.
Awesome video! Really enjoyed this look back at WoW back then, subscribed and look forward to future content 🙂
WHITEKIDNEY COPY PASTE 3 years to generate cash
Nice video dude i been for 4 years playing private servers and didnt know how started
I really enjoy this style of video and I love the focus on the developers rather than specific projects.
Super cool! I've always been interested in the deep history of private servers. I started playing on them in 2011 and have loved the growth and development of server scripting, community, and the impact it has had on the meta and understanding of vanilla.
This was a very interesting video 🙂
I wish I could experience the internet circa 2003 again
Nice one, I subbed
Came from reddit btw
wowemu was a paid software that got cracked every time.
OpenWoW was a project I hosted, and was based off TeamPython and WSD core.
It was suppose to merge with wowd (known as Antrix and Ascent Core), but then Blizzard knocked at my door in 2005.
Never signed their C&D papers, but OpenWoW died cause of the threats they made towards me (which in the end was total bullshit though).
Now I host a server with friends (VengeanceWoW and the now LightsVengeance), and it's purely a hobby right now.
Also, the Alpha client got leaked indeed, and the beta client as well, it contained DEBUG code in the wow.exe file, so it was pretty simple to create a private server for it, the binary basically gave you enough information how to do it. Back then, my coding skills were not great, but I learned it from the other pserver developers 🙂
Also, as info, BlizzHackers got shut down after Blizzard was at my door in 2005, they went to the UK where it was hosted, and threatened the owner of that forum.
Shoutout to Azerothcore.
Nice video! it should have mentioned giants of WoW emulation like MaNGOS/TrinityCore as they really made the difference in terms of game quality and amount of open source contributions.
In 2012, TrinityCore was the 9th most forked repository on GitHub OF THE WORLD ( source: https://github.blog/2012-12-19-the-octoverse-in-2012/#notable-oss-in-2012 ).
Today most of WoW private servers are based on MaNGOS/TrinityCore as well as today's emulation projects such as AzerothCore.
Holy shit I did not expect this much quality in a video from a channel that has only 200 subs. Good shit, please keep making videos seems like you know ur stuff.
Great video!
30.07.2021 NEW FRESH PRIVATE SERVER will launch. It is called DARROWSHIRE. I will give it a try as I’ve been waiting for a very long time for the one that actually will have good population. I know many servers have tried, most of them crashed and burned. But it still won’t stop me from trying it out. Vanilla is the only expansion for me and I hope this server is gonna be my next Home. Read/watch it up and if you can – spread the word please. It is a gear progressive server (something that Blizzard didn’t do in retail) xp rate x 1, no shop (yay!) and fun honor system. If you are hyped like I am (or about to become) help and SPREAD THE WORD.
My very first private server was Dominion WoW during TBC. It was also a TBC private server lol
