This month World of Wacraft as an MMORPG turns 20 years old, and for many of us despite expansions being released, the original flavour – Vanilla – is what we keep coming back to.
For me these are the top 10 reasons why Vanilla WoW as an MMO has experienced so much success over so many years.
This is why WoW has seen, 20 Years, No Changes, STILL A Top MMO | World of Warcraft

definitely agree very strongly on the coming back home to town. really love the change of pace when you really need to head back somewhere to sell, restock, hand in quests, and visit the trainer.
With the quest rewards: I want to stress how cool it is, that many of your great items that you will keep using for long are Class quest items, adds a lot of flavour and makes the stuff only a limited amount of characters can do really cool. Definitely enjoyed the trinket warlocks can get that heals them a bit, those snazzy robes and the very cool scythe.
Great video, just lack of more adds. Make more adds please!
Wouldn't be a Willie Classic video without there being a salty jab at mages in there somewhere. It didn't disappoint!
Because there's no random dungeon finder, no cross server, no xp buffs nor boosts. So many reasons.
Vanilla was made by nerds for nerds.
Retail is made by turds for absurds.
One of the things I loved in Vanilla about those "useless" flavour spells was that they made you really feel like you belonged to your class.
I've played a Pally since then and I remember how most of my playtime was shit damage-wise and levelling was so hard, but once you ended up in areas where there were demons or undead enemies your spells just did crits on everything and you realized that was supposed to be your point: you healed people most times but you became actually useful once you reached zones where most enemies were of a certain type.
Same thing for being able to detect Undead or fear them, which was so satisfying to use considering how most times, as the player, you're on the receiving end of being feared. Good times, man….
The thing that made classic great was the fact that we were not yet heros. Every expansion since its just us heros reacting to whatever threat happens.
Good video
pls add chapters to top lists
Tried all versions. Vanilla #nochanges sticks out among the rest with head and shoulders. Incomparable, it is the best version ever.
Me and 3 friends did a lan party the night that Vanilla came out in 2004, and I was 16. This was also the night i smoked weed for the first time haha. Ive been gaming WoW and smoking weed every day ever since.
Vanilla was an actual MMORPG. There were social, role-playing, and adventure aspects to the game. Servers were actual communities and you'd run into the same people day after day. It was extremely immersive. It was also challenging; not as challenging as something like Everquest, but the game wasn't totally handed to you on a platter. I don't know what it's evolved into exactly, but it's no longer an MMORPG and the whole point is min/maxing item level instead of enjoying the adventure.
Here's a good reason:
Some people develop autism later in their life. The assumption Vanilla is a good game is flawed, but it brings memories , many times , other people's memories, and autistic people just wana do the same shit over and over again.
Ye vanilla was good, ye you can go back every 10 years or so and replay it for the lols, but doing 10 fresh classic classic + hardcore starts is just wrong on a fundamental mental level.
Your lives are going no where, you are either lazy or too slow to compete, so you end up doing the same thing u've done for 20 years, lying to yourself you are good at something.
The lack of balance in Vanilla is also an important trait that modern mmos are afraid to deliver. Some classes were just too OP at dps in raid, or had incredibly strong pvp builds, or completely dominated a role like tank, healer, etc. This mindset that every class needs to be able to do everything and suceed at all content, whether its pve or pvp, is what limits the impact player agency has on the virtual world they're attempting to be a part of. Balance and equality makes everything homonegized and boring.
Ah shit here we go again
I had more fun in classic than i had in retail for years. That being said i find it interesting that i feel this way because classic is a really poor game on many levels. Nostalgia and the community carry it very far. Im talking vanilla classic and not tbc/wrath.
erranikus
I just like the meta gaming, tier lists, addons, GDKP, phasing, and RMT. And it seems that is what most people like about vanilla.
Guys turtle wow is peak at the moment ! New patch just released its awesome !
Classes changes, low level dungeon with new boss And loots ! And hardcore is massive of here as well !!! Join !!
Vanilla is the very peak of wow. cant wait for fresh
Remember Allakazham was around vanilla time to😎
Best game of all time
How many of these fucking videos are people gonna put out Jesus Christ.
The slow lore- and world building is to me the best part. In particular the human zones lvl 1-30 are chock full of small drops of what problems you'll face down the line. The hints at corruption in Stormwind, the undead threat, etc. Epic quests like The legend of Stalvan and The missing diplomat that makes you feel like a small cog in a very big machine. Entering Stormwind for the 1st time and wondering "why is there a cheese shop in the most central part of the city". The fact that you can SEE BLACKROCK MOUNTAIN from the human/dwarf/gnome starting zones! This ominous and at the time unknown pillar in the vast distance that will end up as the epic end game focal point. It's just a masterclass in game design. The slow pace works perfectly.
Hardcore is popping off right now
Notice how all this stuff is about leveling
Endgame sucks. when the game becomes about farming, the same stupid dungeons it becomes a try hard sweat fest, and then nobody wants to play anymore. We already live in a toxic world. Why would I want to immerse myself in another one?
I levelled halfway to 60 then rerolled because my friend has Water Breathing and I didn't
– this guy on why it's still a top mmo
Top 1 reason I quit was toxic community, literally getting kicked on last boss (random group finder) to not contest loot from a premade group. Kicking people for not having high enough gear? Someone being toxic and grief pulling, vote kick fails?
Go even further with the point about fighting full grown dragons. In base Vanilla, you went all the way up to level 60, then had to go on an epic, long globetrotting mission that culminated in a fight with not just any black dragon, but the Brood mother herself. Good stuff.
Back then the goal was to make a great game… not a micro transaction game
And I can give you 10 reasons why after 20 years, Classic is NOT a top MMO.
1) People has changed but they don't want to accept it.
2) People is constantly looking to re-live moments that happened 20 years ago, when most of us were a bunch of 10s year olds, which is literally impossible.
3) People is absurdly driven by nostalgia with literally every single aspect of their lives. This is not specific to WoW, this literally goes for everything including music, hobbies… And yes, this goes for me as well.
4) 80% of the people complaining about how the sense of community is lost in retail and all that… is the same people that when Classic re released in 2018, created a Mage and starting power leveling and power boosting like there's no tomorrow.
5) Community couldn't be more toxic.
6) All of those people who played at the very beginning of WoW's existence (2004) where there was no addons or anything, which was part of the magic, you know, the not knowing part… is the same people that uses 40 different addons for literally every single aspect of the game.
7) People think everybody has the same absurd amount of free time as they had 20 years ago…
8) People keeps complaining about what Blizzard "has done to the game", when literally 95% of what they've done comes from the players, yes, even the YouTubers that keeps complaining about current WoW. Now, you might be thinking "Why is Blizzard listening to the minorities?" Well, that's because to Blizzard, YouTubers and bloggers (back in the day) were speaking on behalf of the majority of the players, so you may want to re think about believing in what these YouTubers say in their videos, as it can very much change when asked privately.
9) It's a game from 20 years old!!!! I'm 50000% confident that if they just kept the game exactly the same, it wouldn't have lasted half of what it has so far.
10) People keeps comparing Blizz WoW to private servers and how they do a better job than Blizzard (lol this is absurdly funny btw)… When in reality, they "love" those private servers only because it's free lol… Even if they have the money to pay for Blizz WoW, they would still love not to. I'm pretty sure that if Turtle WoW had done Season of Discovery in the exact same way as Blizz did, they would've loved it and say "This is the true Classic + we wanted" LOL. Also, let's not forget how hating on Blizzard is fancy nowadays and it makes kids look cool. Don't worry, I do that to from time to time, I know it's cool.
wen fresh
classic has been censored and wokified.
i play on private servers
Very soon and very true
– there are plenty of fun things to do 1-60, endgame (or to be more precise, PvE or PvP endgame instances that insulates the player from the world) isn't the only game in classic.
– this is somewhat implied, but needs to be called out explicitly: no flying is one of the reasons why classic is classic.
…how many paladins in hardcore didn't bother to read the spell description of DI I wonder?
original hit hard, it sounds ridiculous now, but killing the crushridge ogres to grind a few levels out was the best. speaking with the guys on vent and just playing the game as it was, we weren't rushing we just wanted to explore. i remember BWL coming out and listening to guilds progress whilst i levelled my character up. great days.
Thanks for not saying it "hits different"
For me the best was the players interactions. You don't have that anymore in current wow, it's all solo play and no chat whatsoever. Feels boring and isolated after a while
I like it that you are a regular person in the game not some Rockstar
cant change your race language in game anymore i made a ticket about it and blizzard just gave me a generic ai response TWICE. PLEASE BLIZZARD BRING BACK RACIAL LANGUAGES
Well made for a classic game.
Turtle wow hype!
