World of Warcraft Shadowlands had so much potential and so much of it was wasted due to very poor decisions.

Shadowlands should've been a 2 part expansion. 1st expansion: Dealing with the different afterlives ( Cultures that we have established like the Tauren – It was STUPID that they could be sent to bastion and become some blue douchebag – when your whole life was based around the earth mother ). Bastion should've been more "evil" and "sinister" like the feeling it gave off when they showed us Devos / Uther cinematic – Bastion should've been for the holliest of people. The light intervening in death. Thats 9.0 Raid. Dealing with the forsworn and light. 9.1: Should've delved more into Maldraxxus and having a raid / story center around Kel'thuzad ( Same situation, gets pulled into the Maw before his "death" – having him come back in 10.0 with the jailer. ). 9.2: Should've been centered around Ardeanweald and the winter queen ( Gave off evil vibes before shadowlands ) and dealing with the Drust and some more troll / night elf lore. 9.3 and final patch of it would be centered around Sire and and the dreadlords – leading into 10.0. ALL while having Zovaal or the "jailer" be this overlooming threat that we only ever hear about.
My favorite way of handling death is that if you are dead, you are DEAD. If you are planning to interact with it the consequences should be dire and permanent.
The problem with how WoW handle it was that SL taught us that death means nothing the moment we can teleport back to Azeroth.
I still didn't get the point of shadowlands 🤣
Khadgar just randomly showing up at the end of Shadowlands casually like he's taking a tour checking out places to potentially retire at.. was the icing on the cake of just how bad and meaningless they made Shadowlands. Shadowlands was a topic far too large to try to tackle within the constraints of a single expansion. It also felt extremely small. Are there other areas of the shadowlands that people go to? And if so, how do they get there if the arbiter only funnels them into these 5 zones?
What you’re describing in the “revamp” of the 4 zones is basically what they were already. Just a little less. The worst parts, the worst ideas, though: the stripping of who we are through torture was put into the maw. The realms of death is still a bit of a hell scape. If the Maw was the “nice” part, it would defeat the purpose of the Maw which was to be true hell. It would have made the Jailer the good guy by comparison.
