In World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, players journey to the frozen continent of Northrend to face the armies of the Lich King. This “Pandemic System” game showcases familiar mechanisms and gameplay, now tweaked to embrace the setting of the Wrath of the Lich King. Forts, temples, battlegrounds, and more populate the game board as you and your fellow heroes journey across the cold landscape. Along the way, you’ll set up strongholds, complete quests, and do battle with legions of undead.

5.0 – My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 – Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 – Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 – Really enjoyed, don’t love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 – A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn’t lose any sleep.
2.5 – A game I’d play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 – A game I don’t want to play again
1.5 – A game I can’t find any reason to recommend
1.0 – A game that is just bad.

  1. Out of the three Pandemics I've played (Original, Iberia and Lich King), this is by and far the one I've enjoyed the most. Players always get a kick out of fighting the Lich King on the citadel.

  2. I really enjoy this game, i generally play it at one of the higher difficulty settings. I agree that the quests are fairly….lame. And i also miss the set collection aspect. Something i am thinking about trying to house rule is that if you want to submit a card on your quest, you have to have 3 of those cards. So if i need an axe to advance the token, i need 3 fight cards to show. I know the rule is you can only show one card, but those 3 that you are showing only count as one card. Just something i am thinking about throwing in, see if it makes the questing more interesting. Thanks for the review! Still waiting on the Shadow Kingdoms of Valeria review! 🙂

  3. Got this for my wife for Xmas. The entire topic of our first date was WoW and we have all the other pandemics so this was a no brainer for us. 15 years together next month! (Valentine's day)

  4. I too find the questing underwhelming, I hope the first expansion replaces it, should there be any.

On the other hand the Character design is brilliant, the abilities are epic and what I didn't see coming is that your stamina (health) also plays a considerable role. It's easy to overheal low health heroes in one action. High stamina heroes can last longer in fight, go to 1hp and heal for up to 5-7 in one action. Which was a really pleasant surprise, Stamina in games is usually pretty meh. not here!

  5. Great video, great timing! This channel has become my go-to for reviews because I feel like our tastes in games are very similar, and I'm glad you tackled this one, since I've been pondering it.

Perhaps another possible plus side for some would be those who like miniatures? I do love the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, but I'd personally say the minis are one of the biggest "ooo" factors with this game.

  6. Thanks for the review. Sounds interesting overall, and I like the idea of the system for a fantasy medieval game. Probably the two things pushing me away are the IP which I have no interest in and the fact that it's not Legacy. The brilliance of Pandemic Legacy makes it hard to go back to one of the base games. (Though Fall of Rome still gets brought out, and Rising Tide, to an extent.)

  7. We played at normal the first game and won, but it was a fun time. I will probably ramp it up a bit more so that it plays a little tougher. I still think Fall of Rome is the best of the Pandemic system games.

  8. It's all about expectations when it comes to this game. For non-boardgame WoW fans I played with the fight against the Lich King at the end felt very anticlimactic, I guess they hoped for a raid-like experience. We also played on the lowest difficulty to get a grip for the game so we have to play it again on higher difficulty with another attitude: This is a Pandemic game with a tacked on WoW theme so be prepared to get exactly that.

  9. I like this game a lot better than you do. However I 100% agree that the final boss fight is very unrewarding. I wish/hope they would add an expansion to make the final boss fight exciting and rewarding. Ad a gateway or welcoming game to the pandemic series I do not think the Reckoners is a fair replacement or comparison to Wrath of the Lich King.

  10. It's my first "Pandemic" ever and I did enjoy it a lot in a 3 player game. Lost twice so far (3rd difficulty). While I did enjoy it, I must agree with you on quests and final boss "quest" being a bit weak part of it. It would quickly become repetitive and boss alone will always works the same way. It screams for some way to alternate it (addons? not sure).

  11. I was disappointed by the anticlimactic Lich King fight, as well. I've house-ruled it ever since my first play, ignoring his boring 3 damage effect in favor of chucking the dice each time and suffering different attacks depending on the result which I modeled after his World of Warcraft raid encounter. We've enjoyed it more that way, for sure.

  12. This is exactly the review I expected. I will say this for me is by far is my favorite pandemic system game (I dont think you can compare it to a legacy game). But I do agree that the final boss should be more than a quest. The rest of the game feels harder and more chaotic than he does. Its an amazing game to play with light gamers or introduce people to these more involved games and thats where it shines. For a more hardcore group I think you may want to figure out a way to house rule the boss fight to make it feel like a boss fight.
