The tutorial section was absolutely bonkers, HOWEVER, I did have fun once I got to play the game and hope to play again someday!

It's weird that you're thrown into BFA, cause you as a new player have no clue who Jaina is or what Theramore is. I happen to know about Theramore… Cause I played the game 12 years ago! When the place was bombed as part of the expansion story. But I have thousands of hours as context. The leveling experience is such a mess and they have to fix it somehow. Not saying I have a good solution though.
And as Day9 mentions, we don't even see the characters in Exile's Reach ever again and they try to make the characters sound interesting and as if they have some "arc" even though they appear two times and I can't remember their names. The Classic starting zones are much better and way less rushed and overwhelming.
A pretty good example of why classic WoW is still a thing. Everything is on rails in retail, and if you fall off the rails it's basically F.U. in particular until you find the rails again.
Hilarious haha
"Go on, tell me what departments have been slacking!"
Oh, the writers, the UI designers, a lot of the stuff on the gameplay side… like, yeah, the tutorial was bad, but it's not just the tutorial. Look at the entire layout of Boralus Harbor. They give you a diamond indicating the literal first place you're supposed to go as a new player, and that diamond indicates a location that's impossible to reach by moving in a straight line. Hell, following the diamond is nigh-guaranteed to get you lost. Did no one test this? Did no one bring in their grandma and have her try to navigate Boralus Harbor to emulate the new player experience?
The game's vistas are beautiful, but it's so, so disingenuous to suggest that art direction is all a game needs.
It's hilarious seeing Day9 shit on the part of WoW that the retail population largely sees as "fly over content."
I don't recall the horde side being quite this cut sceney.
Day9 you’re the fucking man you’re hilarious miss your content pls keep it up playing whatever games are fun for you (though admittedly this wow content is hilarious)
9:00 he doesnt understand he wasnt there for the dark times
Blizzard has spent so much time trying to cater to everyone with patchwork on top of patchwork on top of patchwork that everything has become this weird jumbled confusing mess.
I haven't played WoW for years so I gotta ask, what the hell happened to the starting areas? They were massively improved after Cataclysm and this looks like such a step down from that.
He shouldn't have jumped into BFA, but retail does zero to help new players know what they should do next.
I was a hardcore wow player/ addict for a long time. I quit 2013 and wanted to revisit my abandoned chars after 10 years. Experiencing some story threads of missed Expansions. I was so lost rejoining the game. Everything changed, the gearing, the skills, even the professions. Suddenly there were timelines to choose. I wanted to level a character to be able to visit the dragon isles for a few hours. The leveling process was incredibly quick, so that I couldn't finish any story arch. So I tried with another char to do another path to get the rest of the story of the flying sperm storyarch.( I guess you know the mounts I'm talking about 😜) still not possible to finish. I tried to find the way to the kul tiras story line. I almost despaired without the help of the internet. And i quested alone all the time. I vividly remember the days of tbc and wotlk. I hardly leveled solo, and it was a blast. I'm sorry to say: but wow's leveling experience is crap. No finite stories, no teamplay, no worthwhile professions, not even dungeons. Just monotonous grindling the damn five quest types. WOW got too big. The players are just too spread over the whole worlds. The old two continents were teaming with life and conflict. Now the heart of WOW is just a Barren (get it?!?) wasteland .
Imagine if you got through week one of boot camp and some black lady drill sergeant (who REALLY loves her son btw) liked how you ran the mile so the President invited you to the Whitehouse and made you ambassador to Russia.
That is going from exiles reach straight to BFA narratively.
Going from Warcraft 3 to the start of current WOW being Jaina about to be executed for war crimes or something is wild
It is a giant mmo thats why they need to make a seperate tutorial to dumb it down for you so you can understand the mechanic of the game not the story.. If you want to delve into story you actually need to choose the original starting location and go through 20 years of content and not go to the tutorial island….Also tutorial area is pretty well done to introduce you to the game unless you are actually dumb sorry 😀 It literally shows you how the quests types work and how to manage your UI etc and how you use your spells for certain situations. I understand you got used to spamming frostbolt in classic and this is hard for you but you are simply overexagurating 😀
From game design perspective this is awful. Game feels like it's designed to replace candy crush from your phone.
But worse part is that the progression is like in an anime. Everyone is a hero, or a demi god. "what? You don't know who that is? That is the toughest, roughest badass on this part of the world". It's cool when such characters are at the end of the game but at the beginning they do not leave space to grow into. Both for the protagonist and the adversaries.
Going from classic to retail is like going from a slow camping trip with a couple close friends to a trip to disney land with your whole extended family.
So great of u to stay tottaly away from anything WoW Day9 so Blizz really can see how it is to enter wow with no knoweldege theese days. They should really do WoW 2
The best, most accurate rant on retail WoW ever made
Blizz month is milion dollar consulation they are getting for free. I dont think anyone who plays regularly would see this nor be able to formulate it.
Please play some more classic!
It's really sad how all modern MMO's have taken the gameplay out of the game, and the very few MMO's left that get worshippsed are visual novels disguised as MMO's where you will never actually play the game until max level if you even get there after 400 hours of visual novel.
It's a sad state of things. MMO's used to be so much more.
Yeah, I played WoW 5 years ago for the first time and my experience was not great.
I'd really be interested to see you do 'the tour' of the current mmorpgs. GW2 has a pretty interesting experience for new players. FFXIV has some fantastic story, but it has always been a tricky thing to get into. There are probably others, but these are the big ones these days.
“Okay I’m gonna try not to cry” 😂
This is the problem:
Blizzard wants to fast track everyone to the endgame, because that’s where everyone is and because they know that a lot of “modern gamers” are too impatient to play through 20 years of old content to get to the current stuff.
So they make this hyper truncated system where you skip most of that old content.
The problem is, by skipping all that, you not only miss out on learning about the world and characters and knowing what’s going on, you also have less time to acclimate and learn the game. So someone who’s not very familiar with mmos like Sean gets blasted with all this info and gets very little time learning by doing. Unlike his experience with classic where it’s slower to get to endgame but he has more time to absorb information.
It’s like buying all your groceries for a month and then trying to eat all of it in one day vs over a month.
This is a symptom of Blizzard wanting ALL the players. They want the game to be for EVERYONE, even the tiktok generation with 5 second attention spans. Which mmos just don’t really fit because they’re inherently a genre that requires long term time investment.
What ends up happening is, unless you have a friend or something to help you and make things easier, new players end up at max level barely knowing how to play the game and with little attachment to it since they were rushed through it. So they quit as fast as they got into it.
On wrath of the lich king actually wow was ended. After that they just made "expansions" to keep people paying the subscription. Let's be honest. Now wow is a bloated, retail is just the denial of blizzard to make a new mmo.
I'm imagining an alternate reality where Day9 picks the Shadowlands intro, and it is an equally "unhinged" experience. Though, on second thought, he might've picked the best expansion for a retail wow experience.
This is so True. Retail is dead. There is so much content they should rather make WOW 2
This is Sean's bid for insanity 😂
Asmongold should defo react to this, would be greeat for your channel and he'd be grreat and giving details to it!
I freakin love you man. Thanks for all the joy over the last two decades ♥
Watching Day9 slowly lose his shit over being stuck in the water has tickled me more than I thought it would.
I feel like these games are now made to people born post 2010, who are simply used to this complete nonsense and sensory overdose. Which is not to bash on them, but I was born on 1991 and I am OVER FUCKING WHELMED hahaha
Wow Day9 that audiobook was pretty cool, you can save $5 by using audible though.
there is nothing dumbed down about retail, just classic andies with boomer apm who cant manage more than one mecanic on a boss or cast more than one ability say,the lvling is aster and its way more narative driven therefore you get a bit more hand holding in questing, you arent lost as a new player much, lvling takes like 2 hours if you know what your doing, its mostly about endgame now,if you want a masochism experience play hardcore vanila classic
