  1. They really need a full experience option for leveling. Takes you from expansion to expansion at reduced experience. Even add in quests that would lead you to the old raids but tuned down for a solo adventurer. That way the new player would get a better understanding of what took place prior to the current expansion. The only issue is the world change from Cataclysm.

  2. Day9 is the best, absolute legend. Only content creator I know of who not only disproved of bobby kotick and blizzard in the recent era, but ACTUALLY said nope i'm done playing their games until he's gone and followed through with it.

  3. The only time a story driven game works is when the story remains IN the game. WoW's story is a disjointed, jarring piece of shit cause you have to get 1/3 of the lore from external sources. SWToR, for the botch that was, has great story content. You could never have heard of Star Wars and you'll still get a great story/gaming experience. FFXIV, you could have skipped playing any FF game and still be immersed in the story. Besides, when it comes to WoW, their best content is the re-release of 15 year old content. How no one at Blizzard has picked up on that and reworked retail amazes me. It's also why my sub remains cancelled.

  4. I remember my first character. WotLK, Ulduar was about to come out. I didn't get to see it because I was leveling, of course. I got to 80 by the time Trial of the Crusader was out. Got to raid a bit. The leveling experience was to much fun. Then everyone started thinking that the end game was the only game, so they made the whole game around the endgame. In Classic only 2% of the people got to see the endgame, and still it was the most successful MMO ever. Was it because of that endgame that only 2% got to see?

  5. AT 24:00 in I like Vampire the Masquerade's version of this during Grouts Mansion mission click on the record players and they tell you the entire storyline through out the mission in a entertaining way using great voice acting and record player space timing. All the while not sacrificing any action downtime.

  6. They cant win though, because you're criticising the game by saying "who are the scourge who is Proudmore" etc etc saying they're not giving context, but then in the same breath criticising the game for too much story telling.

  7. They should bring back the leveling experience to be like classic–make it the grind again, getting to max is the journey, make you go through the actual game/expansions so you know wtf is happening.

  8. > I don't think that's how people learn. people learn by trying things and experimentation

people learn by example. monkey see, monkey do. the absolute best "tutorial" is by leaving the player the fuck alone and having them see what is possible by demonstration.
the absolute best example I can think of is in super metroid, where a bunch of animals show you can wallkick upwards.
in general metroid is master in this. zelda too, kinda. put a player in a postion where they cannot progress until they use the skill you want them to learn.

  9. This seems to be an industry wide problem. Games being around too long, with too much content getting cycled through, and no substantial effort is being put into creating systems to funnel new solo players into the gameloops available let alone resources to understand 10+ years of lore and mechanics. You basically need a player guide, syllabus in hand assigned to you with homework packets to learn about the systems and lore if that interests you, and to sherpa you through activities so you have an idea of how things should be approached so you don't get turned off on something just because of the wrong expectations. These on rails cinematic tutorial "experiences" don't work and are a disservice to new players coming in blind. I haven't touched retail wow since before Ulduar dropped but I'm very familiar with the phenomenon through Destiny 2, and it smells like the same exact issues at work here.
