Illidan did nothing wrong… Arthas did nothing wrong… WotLK was peak warcraft
Watching old Blizzard cinematics makes me lament the fall of Blizzard even more.
11:14
Yup, he looks evil as hell. Yet his father called him a weapon of righteousness. You can tell something went wrong with his son, as he clearly is not a weapon of righteousness, nor does he seem to exercise restraint on his power. You can also assume the wisdom went out the window.
You hear the part "the greatest victory is stirring the hearts of his people" and then the undead react. As if his people are all undead now.
Arthas has such a tragic yet somewhat deserved end. He was a man trying to save his people and had to take extreme action to save his people. It is those actions that started his downward spiral into full blown evil. He discarded compassion and massacred villages to prevent them from spreading the undead plague, he was scorned by this action and lost his mental and emotional support. He got obsessed with vengeance against demons, and did more and more questionable things until at the end there was nothing left of the man that he used to be. He wanted to protect his people and in his search for the power to do so he discarded the people he wanted to protect. Now he only has power left.
Arthas is one of the best Characters in Warcradt History. Once a Noble Prince and Paladin of the Holy Light, in his Quest to save his People from the Curse of Undeath, he took the cursed Blade Frostmourne and slowly became what he wished to destroy, an Undead Knight… a Death Knight. And lastly the Lich King. I f***ing love this Dude.
Arthas' journey to becoming the Lich King is still to this day one of the best stories in gaming for me. The levels of betrayal, manipulation and death. The impact on the world, and it's characters, were monumental. It literally shaped the world for all future events that came afterwards.
I would absolutely recommend looking into lore videos of his story.
There absolutely is good and evil in Warcraft as well as the tons of morally grey.
The story tested characters and pushed them in ways they never imagined. Illidan, the big winged demon guy in the Burning Crusade cinematic? He was an elf that took on demonic magic to become a Demon Hunter and save the world from the Burning Legion (basically an army of demons attempting to invade the world). He was punished for his actions (imprisoned for 10,000 years), but he did help save the world at the time. It was one of those morally grey moments.
There are hundreds of stories to tell from Warcraft lore and every expansion cinematic trailer will give you more questions than answers. Although sadly some of the more recent stories aren't as interesting (or make much sense). The cinematics are always fantastic though.
First, you did pause during WotLK, when the voice of the King talked about "righteousness".
Second, there is a very big difference between these two trailers.
Burning Crusade focuses more on game elements, with the introduction of the Draenei and the Blood Elves. It mostly showcases PCs in cinematic action.
Wrath of the Lich King focuses more on narration. The main – and basically only – character on display is a major NPC.
Third, minor point, you compared Arthas to a ring wraith.
Death Battle compared him to Sauron in person.
considering that WarCraft III ultimately also weaves into World of Warcraft, my recommendation would be the following (it´s effectively the release-order):
– Warcraft III
– Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
– World of WarCraft
– WoW: The Burning Crusade
– WoW: Wrath of the Lich King
– WoW: Cataclysm
– WoW: Mists of Pandaria
– WoW: Warlords of Draenor
– WoW: Legion
– WoW: Battle for Azeroth
– WoW: Shadowlands
– WoW: Dragonflight
– WoW: The War Within
That´s effectively the main trailers for the games/expansions, and since WC3 especially gets relevant again in WotLK, it´s a good addition upfront. I think there are a few more (for the content-patches inbetween the expansions), but the most important ones are imo the main-trailers (especially if you don´t know what´s going on anyway^^)
About the WotLK-trailer: The narrator talking about Arthas (the at-that-time Lich King you see in the cinematic) is his father (Terenas Menethil) talking about his son and former Prince of Lordaeron. The way he talks about him effectively describes Arthas' former self, before he fell from grace and became the Lich King. Arthas used to be a righteous paladin before, but got effectively baited in taking the cursed sword (Frostmourne, the sword he wields in the cinematic), that slowly but steadily took his humanity in WC3: The frozen Throne, ending in Arthas becoming the Lich King
by chronological order of release years (not including warcraft, only World of Warcraft), these years were also the years the cinematics were shown/made, exept for later ones the cinematics were like 1/2 a year older
Original WoW or Vanilla: 2004
The Burning Cruisade: 2007
Wrath of the Lich King: 2008
Cataclysm: 2010
Mists of Pandaria: 2012
Warlords of Draenor: 2014
Legion: 2016
Battle for Azeroth: 2018
Shadowlands: 2020
and the curent expantion "Dragonflight": 2022
So if you wnat to do them in the order they were released, now you know
Never played WoW, but damn, everybody should know this is one of the Cutscenes of all time
I love how they did the narration in the WoTLK cinematic. Everything Teranas (Arthas's father) said, has been proved wrong. He said Arthas grew into a weapon of righteousness, he ended up as a weapon of death and destruction, their line ruled with wisdom and strength, Arthas rules using fear and domination. He was sure that Arthas would show restrain in using his power, the dude just went and resurrected a big ass skeletal frost dragon. And the 'truest victory, is stirring heart of your people', but he just dominated them, and took control over them. But in the end, he really did become king. A Lich King…
Probably my no.1 WoW cinematic
My recommendation is Saurfang's cinematics, there's a 20-something minute video of all the cinematics combined.
Wrath's cinematic, IMO, is when the trailer team for WoW Got Good. Diablo's team was doing great but WoW surpassed them with Arthas and later trailers.
Should check out the start of the story from Warcraft 3 game cinematics & maybe some gameplay before proceeding to World of Warcraft (WoW)…
Other great cinematics from the same game company Blizzard will be StarCraft game series and Diablo game series.
other cinematic games:
Final Fantasy X, X-2
Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2 and Lightning Returns
Final Fantasy XV
Final Fantasy VII remake
Burning crusade was prolly my favorite expansion. Friends stopped playing WoW leading up to WotLK and that is prolly related to my loss of interest as well in the game. I played Cataclysm a little bit to scratch the curiosity itch. I spent so much time in this game as a whole in my youth. I truthfully can't dedicate my time to any one thing like that again. Mostly because I have responsibilities now… but at the same time I realize that the older I get, the more I value my time and not waste it on things that likely won't let me grow and experience new things.
keep on with wow cinematic reactions. and pls do in chronologic order, nobody skips any of them.
each one is an important step on a looong yourney of awesomeness.
WoW is of the genre 'fantasy kitchen sink'. Take a fantasy world and put in anything you can squeeze in. Giant hives of warrior insects, lovecraftian old gods, walking trees, ancient creators of the universe built a doomsday machine, sunken cities, floating magical university, demonic hordes, spaceships, ancient panda emperor of not-china, etc. It's fun but like Fate stuff don't sweat the minutiae.
My grin at Illidan's "you are not prepared" man that took me back.
Prince Arthas Menethil. Crown prince of Lordaeron. Lover of Jaina, General, hero of mankind, slayer of demons and undead, avenger of the plague victims, murderer, massacre orchestrater, betrayer, arsonist, killer, usurper, species extinction, slayer of menand kings, conquerer, death of kingdoms, betrayer of mankind, Heartbreaker, Litch King. This was Arthas. This IS Arthas.
Warcraft is so woven into Russian gaming culture, that it seems soooo strange to me, that someone has never seen these trailers. Blizzard's cinematics are really insane, you definitely should watch more of them
You should start from the beginning when they first started all the way to now.
Illidan's voice always gives me chills. Blind demon hunter fanboi for decades and still going here
The ting with WoW lore is that no one is specifcly Evil or Good. For example the factions Alliance and Horde. People who dont know anything about it would Probably say that The Alliance is the good side and Horde is evil. But they are both equal. The world of warcraft is hevaly in the Gray Zones of Moral Overall. If you get deep into the Storys you can find reasonable explations for the actions of most charaters no matter what side.
Edit: Aight I wrote this in Context to the TBC react.
In context of the Wrath of the Lich King Cinematic: The Lich King is the closest youll come to "Bad" in the Wracraft universe. But the person Behin the Lich King (The person in the Armour) isnt. he got possesed by the Ghost of the Lich King after grabbing the sword he was wielding to save his Kingdom hunting down a Dreadlord (A higher deamon) who followed the orders of the Lich King to try and Wipe out his kingdom and turn them into undead. Arthas was the Prince of Lordaron, the Son of Terenas Menethil. After getting Possed in the far away lands of Northend (A Icy tundra. What you can see in the cinamtic) he went back to his homeland to have it overtaken by the undead servants. Tho the greed for power of the Ghost of the Lich kind (and to fully take controle of him) made him go back to Northend to retive the Helmet of Domination (The one he is wearing the the cinematic) and to sit down on the Frozen Throne. Tho the sheer will of Arthas was just bearly enough to Seal himself in the Frozen throne and keep the Scurge (the undead) undercontrole. Until he was finally fully overpowered by The lich kind (Originaly named Nerzuul)
I typed all of this from memory and it should be around 90% correct.
I recommend doing the 1st one since the animation is on par with the rest of the cinematics even though it's 20 years old and then Cataclysm (after that all in order)
Arthas… The most legendary and tragic character in gaming history….
Someone get this man a playlist
Arthas is the last of the great villainous characters in World of Warcraft!
I think I mentioned on the last video that I started playing back in Burning Crusade. I never placed Warcraft 3 so I didn't have the initial background on Arthas when Lich King came out but I have read the novels and if you're ever interested, there is one called "Arthas" that covers a TON of his backstory. He is a seriously amazing character that…..I'm not gonna say he fell but instead he chose that path and charged down it. The things he did along the way…..enslaving Sylvanas as his Banshee Queen after killing her and forcing her to murder her own people (you saw her in the first cinematic you watch…the one that screamed. Her story is amazing too), the raising of Sindragosa (the dragon). It's intense. I definitely recommend the book. 🙂
There are several other Battle for Azeroth cinematics that are fantastic. And honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the WoW cinematics. They're all just beautiful.
Oh! You mentioned the music in Lich King.
Yes. That particular track still gives me chills. I do know the words are taken from a Warcraft 3 song called "O Thanagor" (O King). but you can also find this track on the soundtrack for WotLK as "Arthas, My Son"
