Warcraft From Space – 20 Year Evolution of the WoW Map

With the launch of War Within I’m looking at how the World of Warcraft map has evolved over all 10 expansions using the in-game map files to create a realistic view of what Azeroth and the other areas of the world might look like.

Thanks to Marlamin and others who’ve created the datamining resources WoW.tools and WoW Export.

  1. I wait for the day when Azeroth is really one big planet and I can get into a boat and sail the oceans, from landmass to landmass, fishing in between and occasional storms.
    Like Zelda The Windwaker.

  2. Ignored zones
    TBC: Isle of Quel'Danas
    WotLK: Crystalsong Forest, Hrothgar's Landing
    MoP: Isle of Giants
Legion: Eye of Azshara (named but not added: Krokuun, Mac'Aree/Eredath, Antoran Wastes)
    BfA: Tol Dagor, Mechagon, Nazjatar
    SL: Korthia, (Tazavesh, kinda)
DF: Amirdrassil (Shown but named as Emerald Dream)

  3. I hate that you have this as a 2d globe, which would make some of these continents on the opposite side of the world. However, we know there is something else on the opposite side and what we currently have is literally just one side of the globe.

  4. I miss when you could accidentally travel somewhere you weren't meant to. You die and think "damn, I wanna get strong enough to go there". Taking all the progression out of the game with the world scaling sucks. I really enjoyed the story of TWW though and look forward to seeing where things go from here. I'm moreso excited for Midnight and The Last Titan though.

  5. What bugs me to no end is inconsistency of deserts and icebound zones of the continents. I understand that some places are mountainous and weather patterns might affect others, but look at Northrend vs Pandaria, or Southern Dragon Isles vs the North-Western Eastern Kingdoms. Just feels off to me.

  6. I stopped playing when MoP launched, so I learned quite a bit about what these new places look like from this video!

This is actually a really awesome way to explore the map. I wish the in-game world map looked like this lol. Everything is so easy to recognize

  7. Hmmm. Seems like. It would make more sense to take a zeppelin west to the Easter kingdoms from kalimdor instead of east. And that we should have seen ALL these islands on the way lol.

  8. It wouldn't look like that. If you were a horde mage and teleported from Elwynn Forest at noon into Orgrimmar, according to your Azeroth globe it would be midnight in Orgrimmar, but it was noon there too.

  9. There is a HUGE problem whit map thing. The fact you finish Legionfall campaign and from Vindicaar you see the first map, no Kul Tiras, no Khaz Algar, no Dragón Isles, no Zandalar, or minors Isles. Is a HUGE mistake.

  10. So if you start a new account today does that mean you can go anywhere from any of these expansions? How does that work? Do you have to buy each expansion? Do they die after time? Do they stop being available?

  11. I like that you touch on how Azeroth was originall the kingdom in the south, and Lordaeron was in the north

That was all retconned to be the "world" of Azeroth and the kingdom of Stormwind

I preferred the original setting and lore and aesthetic

  13. When you look at these maps, they are not very following temperature climates that should be available at some areas. Snow zones are somehow "randomly" thrown around 🙂 Maybe Pandaria isn't that much south as we think and there is still something further down. I would more think that Tanaris is somewhere near the equator.
