Mcdoubles back again with a brand new video and today I want to define what makes Vanilla WoW unique and then go over how to add the “+” to Vanilla+ based on our definition of what makes Vanilla WoW, Vanilla.

I’ll then take a look at all of the servers, both upcoming and already out, that can be seen as “Vanilla+”, and we can decide once and for all if they fit the definition or not.

The Four Servers in the scene right now that we look at:

Azeroth at War – https://discord.gg/BT2W3Gkn94

Duskhaven – https://discord.gg/duskhaven

Project Epoch – https://discord.gg/8kVMKDuj4M

Turtle WoW – https://discord.gg/dRhd6s3GXX

  1. Duskhaven is not V+ cause u have too much wotlk things like
    The Dungeon Finder
    The fast levelling
    Mount at lvl 10
    The wotlk talents and skills
Thats why im saying that its not V+ cause it dosent feel at all like vannila

  2. I agree with the vast majority of what you had to say. All of these servers are yes Vanilla+, the closest thing to Classic+ imo would be Ascension. Vanilla to me is just Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, max level 60, no flying and minimal qol. TBH for those reasons I don't have much interest in Vanilla+ LMAO, after all these years I'm kinda sick of the limited content of just Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, I want to fly and I'm getting older and like additional qol. But on the other hand I hate modern retail for many reasons, so I now find myself on Ascension or now moved on to Helios and may play Felsong when it comes out. I would be really interested in a Classic+ progression server that went to Wrath, that would be sweet. Oh yeah and what you said about the toxicity of open world PVP is exactly why I don't like it, on most private servers it is a high level ganking, griefing or killing you while you're AFK.

  3. I think what makes duskhaven less vanilla to me was the RDF (with teleport) and the mindset of pushing to max and doing endgame content. But I think you could make a case for it being right at the edge if barely.

I agree with your pvp video (and I'd love to see more servers like that) also but I think the problem was more so people seeing it as being "forced" to pvp. Like, removing pve servers. I doubt they'd care if those changes were made a new server type or integrated into pvp servers.

Also if client isn't the factor by this definition, I wanna know how using a later client (and some abilities maybe not all) would work. Like, cataclysm or mists. Still with the old world. And closer to vanilla health/mana regen to compensate, etc.
And slightly off topic but tbc/wotlk/cataclysm+ (or changed up or whatever) Not gonna lie… sorta curious.… Hmm.
Even some later features in vanilla servers. Like hunter focus. Would be interesting.

Leveling speed I think turtle too slow duskhaven a bit too fast. I think the problem though isnt the leveling speed but me having to drink every one and a half mobs lol. Or using 2 abilities. To not go oom. Not fun anymore (on some classes). If the game feels smooth/engaging and theres stuff to do while leveling like new challenges and dungeons and stuff. Oh yeah.

I like more custom endgame dungeons or mythics for sure.

  4. Can we just pause for a minute, and STOP promoting private servers that offer ridiculous cash shops ? I respect the work, dedication and passion that went into these servers but it's all ruined by stupid microtransaction choices, as well as crossfaction and PvE game modes… Fuck that

  5. To tackle some points:
    1. people who claim that using 3.3.5 client makes the server not vanilla+ are just plainly wrong. Unless they are not using Dungeon Finder from the client, I see no reason why the graphics or enhanced talent system should not be use, cause that is the point of "plus" of the vanilla+. Like, imagine there was never WotLK, and now someone decides to take vanilla talents and tweak them a bit, and ends up on talent system from 3.3.5. The fact that this was part of WotLK does not impact the "vanilla" feeling if other bullet points are fulfilled.
    2. Regarding your comment about speed. I don't actually consider Vanilla to be slow because of slow levelling speed. I see the problem in not enough content, so the speed was severely impaired by that. Having new content in all levelling brackets (especially 40+) would significantly increase the levelling speed. Some tweaks to xp could be done, but I would not go to 1.5-2x xp rate. So new levelling content would be the plus.
    3. Regarding comment about how hard are the raids. Completely agree with you there, and the "plus" in that part would be new mechanics on bosses, heroic and mythic difficulties, new raids.
    4. And the last big "plus" (at least from my side) is in regards to the slow paced combat and strategy. I actually reaaaally loved that certain classes had abilities which you need to use in raids and/or dungeons (e.g. decursing, resistance totems and similar) and this feels thematically good. And I would go more in that direction. A lot of people argue this with the fact that you are forcing the composition (e.g. having mage to spellsteal the shield in Gruul's lair, which means you must have at least 1 mage in your comp), but for me that's how it should be. You should not stack 15 warriors and 15 rogues in MC/BWL. All classes should be more or less equally searched for, cause if not, then all people will play only few classes and others will become obsolete…

  6. Vanilla + is vanilla plus extra custom content.
So if it starts as NOT vanilla (WOTLK client), you can't add things to it, and make it vanilla.
The clue is in the name ^ ^

  7. Well thats a pretty easy one in my op, if its base vanilla with extra stuff(but still Max lvl 60 with the same stuff as the base game) the server is vanilla plus, if its other exp thats not vanilla(lich king, burning crusade etc) thats Classic plus, its not vanilla but it is still classic

  8. for me vanilla combat while lvling is just too boring. drinking mana constantly and using 1 or 2 abilities to preserve mana even tho you have alot of them is just too boring for me. i think there can be balance where you still need to drink mana from time to time but at same time can use lil bit more of your skills

  9. Duskhaven have a non vaillan stuff imo
The wotlk talents are not v+ it feels like you are playing beta retail wow.
The dungeon finder teleports you so you have to go to the world
Yet you still call it a V+ server

  10. For the most part, this is really just semantics. But my own definitions are as follows:
Vanilla+ is Vanilla client with any cut content/additions from WC1/2/3/RPG/Vanilla WoW.

Outlands can be done and so can Northrend. But both need to be adjusted to Vanilla lore. If you don't lower the levels, it's TBC/Wrath content. Technically Pandaria could even be added(Probably just use the Wandering Isle though), due the Chen being in WC3. Uldum, Hyjal, Grim Batol, Quel Thalas, Tel Abim, Dragon Isles, Tol Barad, Emerald Dream, Gilneas, Kezan, Kul Tiras, Zandalar, Plunder Isle, Gillijims Island, Broken Shore (not the isles), Karazhan, Emerald Dream. That's all fine to use.
But Twilight highlands, Blood/Azuremyst isles, New BC stuff (we really only get to use Hellfire Penninsula, Shadowmoon Valley, and Blades Edge Mts. With a few other landmarks we don't have in woW) No Wrath Northred stuff outside of Dragonblight/Icecrown Glacier.

You can do what Turtle WoW and Duskhaven have done with the subzones they expand/create. Same with the Epoch dungeon alterations. This is just adding to vanilla content.

We know 3 classes got cut from Vanilla, so more classes are fine as long as they existed before BC came out. Necromancers, Runesmiths, Demon Hunters, Brewmasters, SM Monks, Rangers, or Deathknights fit into Vanilla+. But custom classes are more in the Classic+ category instead.

We also know Ogres have been attempted since just as long, so more races are fine as long as long as they fit the criteria (Broken Draenei are okay and they split off from the Eredar species, not the BC version where Draenei is the main version. No Vulperra but Zandalari would be okay. DArk Iron dwarves are fine but no Frostdwarves. Furbolg would be Vanilla+ but Arrakoa/Vrykul would be classic+.

Deathwing, Illidan/Kaelthas/Vashj/Akama, Aszhara, Kiljaedon + Sargaeras, Arthas/Lich King, is all still usable. You just have to adjust how you do it. Kaelthas, Vashj, and Illidian could even be on Azeroth since that's where we last saw them.

Probably easier to turn Emerald Dream/Northrend/Outlands/Pandaria/Hyjal into max level zones than it would be to turn each of those expansions into full on continents. Turn Uldum/Emerald Nightmare/Naga undersea spot/Black Temple/Ice Crown Citadel into raids or dungeons.

  11. Unpopular opinion: Vanilla or Vanilla+ is too hyper-restrictive. The classless model, in my opinion, is much more enticing and fun. That or the CoA model where you have dozens of classes to choose from instead of a small pool. Vanilla/Vanilla+ is too stale and gamers today just demand more.
