What Nerf to Fire Mages Really Means for Mages Patch 9.1 Shadowlands

Hey guys, finally with some new content ready for the channel, I’m super excited for it.
In this video, I’m laying out my thoughts about Fire Mage nerfs and what will it mean overall for the Mage community. I always tend to look at things a bit too pessimistic so have that in your mind.
I know that we are going to get Master Flame Conduit option, but other classes will get their Conduit options as well. I personally think that Elemental Shamans will pop off, since they can do more AoE sustained damage than Fire Mages without the big CD and their solo target damage excels. We still might see Fire Mage + Elemental Shaman in the Mythic+ teams, but I still think that there will be less Mages, since they will suffer raiding wise as well and most of those players are heavy raiders as well.
Anyway I’m done with my gibberish, I hope that you will enjoy the video and have a nice day!

  1. Hello, this is my take on Fire Mage nerfs – I will focus more on the raiding scene in the next video and what are my predictions for the best Mage spec for the raid.
Honestly, I might be a bit too pessimistic in this video, but I have my concerns. Fire Mages won't do the most damage in M+ anymore and I do strongly believe that Elemental Shamans will become new Fire Mages of this patch. Also, it's going to be hard to play a Fire Mage in Mythic+ if they won't be the best option for the raid. And we all know that players will see a lot of pros playing Elemental Shamans and they will want to take as much of them in their own groups, it happens every patch.
Some people will also say that the nerfs were needed and that we are getting Master Flame Conduit (Flamestrike damage) – which is kinda true, but still other classes will also get another Conduit Power. That's why I will say that Fire Mages will be an A tier for Mythic+, with Elemental Shamans being the only S tier RDPS for it.
Also the big strength of Fire Mages in 9.0 was the Prideful aspect, but we will no longer have that and as I already stated CDs won't be needed to kill the new Lieutenants and that's kinda a big thing in my eyes.

  2. hi Marko!! i took a break from WoW after i cleared heroic and some mythic (mythic raiding was grueling for me so i quit haha) was looking to come back for 9.1 and this is some sad news… i always stuck with fire no matter what so i think even though they’re getting lots of nerfs it’ll be fun and more rewarding to be too dps, do you think night fae will still be the go to covenant? thanks marko for the videos 🙏

  3. atm the mage community is extremely undecided, when it comes to meta mage. you ask 5 ppl and get 5 different answers. i guess at the beginning of 9.1 kyrian arcane will be the strongest st option. but considering, we get a 3. conduit slot, fire at least can compensate the flamestrike nerf, with the flamestrike conduit, i don't care for flame patch nerfs as much, since most tanks are afraid of fire on the ground and kite the packs out of it anyways 😅. what bothers me the most is the logic behind the fire mage nerfs. fire is only great, if your tank can survive big pulls and the healer keeps him alive, otherwise, you do overall mediocore dps…so blizzard nerfed fire aoe, only because of mdi, so 99% of the playerbase suffer because of mdi. the kindling nerf also sucks, cuz it also nerfs st dmg as well as the conduit nerf, without PI fire st was never great and nowhere near as good as aff or sp, so again this nerf is just bullshit, but what not to complain… it's sad but typical blizzard. my probleme is, i don't want to change cov. again, i don't like farming anima to build up a cov. sanctum from scratch -.-. so either i stay nf and fire being mediocre, or i change to kyrian focusing on arcane, or i change back to venthyr and rely on frost…, for now i stay with nf at least i guess it's the best cov for multispec, and i wait how the meta develops. omg^^

  4. I have to disagree, while I do agree fire mages are gutted, from a strictly raid standpoint, Arcane was already on the heels of fire dps wise. The mobility is big sure but slipstream solves alot of that problem. Im also a CE raider, Arcane is my current go to for raid.

  5. Hi Marko, you kind of eluded to it but I did not hear a full answer in your video or comments. I hear that you are kind of intending to do some elemental Shaman, and it is obviously all up in the air AND probably not super relevant unless you are doing bleeding edge keys or raiding. If you had to stick with Mage, what covenant and spec would you be playing? I am thinking that for someone like me that does primarily decently high keys and low level Mythic raiding, I am thinking Venthyr with Frost for M+ and Arcane for raid. Curious to hear your thoughts, thanks.

PS: I might just switch too to something else, I just don't get as much joy from anything besides Mage really so I might just stick on it even if it is suboptimal to another class.

  6. I like how fire mage was the OP specc of 9.0.x for everyone just because it was OP in a mdi setting. Its average for m+ pug and also average for raid, it was only brought for int buff for rwf lol.
I just dont hope arcane becomes meta, the arcane dream is an elitary group, not some meta slave kindergarten haha
But looking at the current changes and raid testing, actual balance tuning will be done during live heroic week. Balancing was horrible on the last test and there were no more changes – lets see i guess

  7. yo Dr Jay, showing Kyrian Arcane Mage is Suuuper strong (in terms of dps) and better than Frost in this patch (in m+). You're right though, next patch, they can't rely on endless mana after prideful but they'll still retain that disgusting radiant spark, touch, arcane power combo that does 40-70k on FIVE TARGETS! Also, especially during affixes like Sanguine or Necrotic where there's constant moving of trash packs, Arcane doesn't need positioning for their damage as it's not Areas they're aiming on the grounds like Frost or Fire.

  8. I've always appreciated your videos. Really helped me push my fire parses from high 80s to mid 90s so thank you for that. I've decided to soec and covenant swap temporarily to get Kyrian to renown 40 just as a back up, but I think frost will be safest approach. Either way, fire is my main picky. I've played it since legion and would like to keep it going so here's fingers crossed!
