World of Warcraft is celebrating its 20th birthday this year and some of the game’s most senior bosses have told the BBC there is “boundless” potential and “easily” enough stories to keep the game going for another 20 years.
Since Microsoft’s merger with World of Warcraft’s maker Activision Blizzard last year, there has been speculation about the future of some games, with a survival game project widely known as Odyssey scrapped, and 1,900 members of Activision Blizzard staff laid off.
Fans were even more concerned after BlizzCon, an annual gaming convention, was cancelled for 2024.
BBC Newsbeat spoke to the bosses before the BlizzCon cancellation, with World of Warcraft’s vice president and executive producer Holly Longdale and associate game director Maria Hamilton saying they have been given Microsoft’s “full support” and didn’t rule out potential crossovers with games such as Elder Scrolls.

I played for 10 years only game
I want Warcraft 4
I am a fan that also played closed beta in 2004 and have never looked back. I have been playing since, spend tons of my time collecting mounts and transmogs. There are a ton of us, who were older then and have been playing since and still <3 Next to Middle Earth, Azeroth is the only other world I could live in forever. <3
No name tags??? great professional work from BBC =P
I was introduced to WOW almost 8 years ago by a couple coworkers, one has been playing since it started and I can’t imagine NOT playing, I am hooked! There is so much to do in the game. I’m not a hardcore player, am in my 60s and still have a lot to learn, but still enjoy it so much.
3:48 right here is where they got it wrong… making it more “accessible”, as player back then and one now, they destroyed the fabric of what it made it so successful: the need for other people in order to excel at the content. They made everything easy to obtain and devalued the reward from achievement. They used their so-called-data to make the game more like other games that preyed upon instant gratification circuits in our brain rather than the community centred format it was. We got to see this play out again via their “Classic” franchise where they learned nothing. Classic Vanilla was great because it required teamwork and cooperation to succeed… fast forward to Wrath classic and now Cata, and that community culture is all but gone, and the numbers have dropped where guilds can barely put together raids anymore and they had to shut down and merge servers… because they learned NOTHING! And don’t even get me started on the release of SoD and cannibalizing the player base. It’s breathtaking how clueless a company can be.
Still survival hunters suffers in the game :/
I want to bring this beautiful world of Warcraft to life as a full theme park attraction. Please Blizzard Company contact me please
I see so many jealousy replies in the comments section
No way this game will survive 20 years unless there is significant changes – despite the cost, if they want wow to survive the next 6 years they need to create a new game on a new upgradeable engine. They should have already started yet they cling desperately to this old ass engine. It is unbelievably outdated. The MMO space right now in the next 2 – 5 years is going to be deadly. I.e. Riot mmo with the next 5 years, Ashes etc
The protagonists of this video didn't really catch me with their charisma.
Fuk urseves
I was not expecting to find myself as the cover image of a BBC News video.
If you wouldn't mind, crediting the cosplayer would be nice. Thank you.
"what type of people are playing wow now ?" The answer should have been " a bunch of they thems.that are offended by their own farts "
Dragonflight is my favorite expansion, and I've played them all. Great job y'all. (Now quit laying people off…)
Elder Scrolls online – a W.o.W. Veteran ~ thank me later
Way to use cosplayers/photographers images without giving them credit- if you’re going to use their hard work for your thumbnail, make sure to give them credit- the cosplayer front and center is someone who worked hard to get into the crown championships of cosplay, show her some respect!
Data-driven game development doesn't work. For instance: When you funnel the WoW players in a certain direction, OF COURSE the players are going to play that way, you're coercing them into it. It's silly, because Activision-Blizzard, which is the same company that makes both WoW and Call of Duty, is seeing the fallout from using data-driven development in Call of Duty. The players of Call of Duty were asking for one thing but the data was telling Activision something else so Activision ignored them and now the players are leaving. Each COD has a smaller player base than the last when it could be thriving. WoW is ALSO going into a downward trend.
You could argue that the playerbase is shrinking due to the age of both games and I'm sure there's merit to it but remember both games have diehard fanbases, the type of fanbases that will stick around if you just give them what they're looking for.
You guys used a photo of a cosplayer @lisa.jski
Should definitely credit her and photographer that took the photo as you used it without her permission.
As this video, contains footage of a cosplaying social media friend of mine @lisa.jski I thought it right to point out that the accepted protocol is to credit anyone whose images, voices or words that you use.
Interesting that my comment asking for credit to the cosplayer in the thumbnail (@/lisa.jski) seems to keep disappearing
I hope they return to what made Vanilla so special.
Nice to see @Lisa. J on the cover image on a BBC news video, you should give her credit
Maybe credit the cosplayer @lisa.j and in the description since you’re using her as your thumbnail.
Nice video and fantastic WoW is still going strong…but these cosplayers literally make WoW come to life.
The unaccredited Slyvanas pictured in the Thumbnail is @lisa.jski
Remove Mythic raid. Let it be easier, would bring in more people. Mythic is too hard and gate the cool tmog.
“Boundless potential that is being bled out”.
Even here they manage to bring in DEI, they have to atone for their sins of the past…..
FIX MMR!
I have been playing wow for 18 years. 🙂 and I don't plan on stopping.
The World Soul Saga is gonna be awesome! Exciting!
Not really. Blizzard knows it's going downhill, they even canceled Blizzcon this year… Which would have coincided with the launch of the new trilogy they are supposedly proud of. If they don't believe in their own game, why would we?
Started playing in 06 and was hooked until BFA and quit in Shadowlands. I started back for classic. I think ranked solo battlegrounds and delves are a good direction, but retail ruined professions and so much else…
love the Classic game mode
