max was raiding then they realized the power of the 21st man
Max isn't "just there" he's raid leading. They were the first team to have a raid leader not playing to get a better overview of things and they won that tier, so they've been doing it ever since and Echo copied them.
If you raid on a high level you quickly realize that having a raid leader outside of the gameplay is actually extremely beneficial. That's why Max does what he does, he's essentially the coach but calls plays real-time. That's really what a raid leader should do to perform their role the best they can, most guilds just doesn't have the benefit of doing it for obvious reasons
