Part of how World of Warcraft redefined the MMO genre was by changing the metrics of success. The exorbitant numbers WoW achieved destroyed the common idea of what a successful MMO was. MMORPGs with hundreds of thousands of players became failures in WoW’s shadow overnight.

Many MMOs like Warhammer Online and Everquest 2 tried to be the next “WoW Killer” only to collapse in the process.
