This video discusses the levelling formula in World of Warcraft; particularly Chromie Time, and why I think it fails new players who wish to learn about the story. And what can potentially be done to enhance new players experiences going forward! It also discusses abandoned/forgotten characters, features and systems.
This is my first ever video so I understand the quality may be lacking, and my God using Adobe Premiere Pro was such a nightmare as a beginner, lol. But here it is! Any praise/criticism is welcome.
Thank you for watching!

Great video, though you were repeating a few points here and there so a bit more polish in the script to remove the redundancies might help but overall a good first try. Also, I did a double take when I heard Ragnarok Online music at the end there, gives my old MMO player heart the nostalgia.
basically, wow needs to be like ffxiv when it comes to story. we didnt need a 28minute video for this. but you right.
Chromie time not being an option from the start is so fucking dumb
I almost wish you could play through the raid with bots or something as part of the story. Could or could not be difficult but at least the story can be capped off. Give rewards for completing expansions and levelling is already better
Blizz should just stick to what they are good at, like drinking bre@st milk
Disliked this video bcs its all BS. First of all if a new player wants to play the whole story they can, there is a small YT streamer Renfail that has a series playing wow for the first time and he finished the whole BFA story and DF story before stepping foot in endgame. And even if u dont do that you can finish the story of DF and go back and do the old ones. And dont get me started on FF14, you said that u cant get nerfed and do old content but u can with party sync. And you can raid on timewalking you just need to get a premade group. Is the game perfect NO by no means but all of u content creators do is hate hate hate. This was one of the most rich expacs in modern wow and you still talk down on it. New players can play the whole game if they chose but the truth is nobody likes doing boring old quest where u have to travel 3 continets to pick up a branch form a tree. New content is compact easy to reach simple dialog easy to understand. I play since Cata. Been raidng CE draneor, legion,BFA, and begging of SL castle nathria. Also do pvp and high kye. The game is AMAZING and any new player wanting to try it out wont regret it. And if FF14 was so great they wont be avreging 8-10k viwers on twitch on peak streaming hrs and have 100k players daily.
Now everything is "when did that happened?" and the answer is "in a book that it's at the blizzard store written by someone who has never played any warcraft game and it's retcone pretty much everything you know"
I know its hard to do.. but I want FFXIV MSQ (The good parts), with good gameplay. I never felt like there was an MMO that was able to do both effectively
But seriously.. WoW needs to get onto an upgraded engine..
Rebooting is the dumbest thing you could do to WoW.
It is Asmongolds dumbest (WoW) take to date.
WoW is a game I have basically given up on learning the lore for because so much of it is either lost to time or never visible to the player in an easy to experience medium. Like I understood the lore through MoP for the most part. But because they had major story events in a random book outside of the game when WoD happened I was so confused and quite.
It would be really cool if they did a curated time walk Leveling experience with unique quests and cinematics to tell the whole story
I've discussed this with my boyfriend many times – I started playing at the end of BfA and he is a veteran. He built me up, kept me updated and spent hours explaining both the story and the mechanics of the game. When starting, you basically NEED someone saying "No no no, do this instead, go here instead, it will be better for you," to have a good time without confusion. And that should NOT happen in a game.
It's cuz Blizzard wants to make phone game money, and somehow they think they can do that with a computer game, to a bunch of millennials who hate phone games lol
I used to play wow alot until cata… I always loved the lore, the quests and the main storyline. —- I logged in again at shadowlands. I have no idea wtf is happening. I used to be a Tauren Warrior with a big axe and a RP guild. Now? Im a fox-furry warrior, just cos I want to spread hate in PvP…. Am I the problem or is it the game? \\ BTW Sylvanas used to be hot, wtf is this game even trying to do? I just dont understand.
Azerothian Archives came out and it has nothing to do with what Day was talking about. it tells the story of one Dracthyr battle from the past through a bugged out public event that operates on a timer like prior ones. There's a daily hub with even more bugged and poorly thought out quests. It's really something.
You put into words how I’ve been feeling about the game for years. Like even if I was there for certain events I’ll forget what happened and would love a chance to play through just the important story beats again. I just want a way to replay WoW without all the waiting and grinding so I can finally know what’s going on.
what they need to do,and i know this either wont happen or will take years,is revamp the vanila zones again, make them up to the modern standards both visualy and mecanicaly (doing stuff like worgen starting zone these days is rly aged poorly),and have that be the new player experience, and use the dungeon npc tech to let people do raids when doing chromie time so if they do stuff like northrend they get to actualy have a conclusion
i love how more and more wow players and even veterans are spreading awareness about the wow story line – i myself playing since 2004 and i would love to play a whole new story line with a new character! i played FF14 and my god… is it good. You actually feel like a hero. WoW nowdays is just… fortnite.
I think the leveling experience and story could both be fixed by "Chromie Time" eliminating the filler fetch and kill quests and condense the zones to the major story beats. That way you can learn what happened across the expansions without having to get 150 animal meats and kill 300 murlocs. The mini dungeon/raid to see the conclusion would be great to. And I really wish we could go back to just being adventurers and not the god hero slayer kings of the universe!!!!! that we are now.
the problem is you get nothing besides cosmetics when you do past content. GW2 does old content the best of all mmos. there are multiple things in every expansion that progress and grow your character.
You should be allowed to level a character brand new to max level in the current expansion.
I've stopped playing wow soo long ago that it's been nearly 9 years now! I just started hating WoW, it's tired storyline, and the dumbing down of the PvP system! Still playing FFXIV, but my time there is coming to an end soon to.
I actually think your idea with the npc dungeons is a great way to solidify the old expansion experiences!
Having a short miniquest that just provides some Chromie-specific introduction to the content would be good too. Like providing a short summary that explains what kicks off the events of the expansion, potentially alongside a small series of quests involving replicating the pre-launch events.
That'd be the dream. That AND a hopeful Cata-like event to freshen up the 1-60 experience again, updating the content to be far more relevant.
If they really want to go in more of a character-driven direction, they ought to retroactively involve the npcs in the raid progression through those npc dungeons to culminate an expansion's story.
One of the best ways for a new player to actually play through the game's previous expansions is… Insane. Like currently it requires buying dragonflight, doing a class trial to trick the game into letting you do Chromie time, and then actually going through the expansions, and freezing your level at 59. Like WoW has become more Insular I recognize, but it is going to be even more insular if it entirely rejects New players who are interested in the story.
Sunk cost fallacy is exactly that, a fallacy. Why should the average player have to settle for a jumbled disjointed mess just because a couple of people chose to grind out a billion pointless achievements? The game 100% needs a reset, no if or buts.
I can't give a fuck about lore/story… I just want to play. And 10.2.5 is giving me that 🙂
MMORPGs are a terrible media for telling stories. Everyone takes a turn killing the Lich King over and over again for drops. How epic when you've killed Arthas for months on end. The story is always subservient to the game mechanics.
I think this video is the perfect encapsulation of how bewildering it is to be a new player in Wow. I started playing in 10.1 and everything you said here was my exact reactions to the story beats. Who is that? What am I the champion of again? The sensitive music is swelling,am I supposed to me feeling something? I started enjoying things, just STARTED enjoying the story when I tarted looking up wow lore videos on Youtube. The story feels fine, but thats the main way i feel like I missed out is that I basically need others in the Community to tell me exactly what is happening the entire time im playing.
Kinda why I started playing again with Dragonflight, Played an Evoker as my main and literaly focused only on what made sense for that character, fresh out of the stassis. Best way to not think of the past content
My main gripe started in late MoP or mid WoD where I noticed a pattern where players are incentivized to make a mad dash to level cap to "Enjoy" WoW. I always said look at all the cool stuff from past expansions and what they had to offer but Blizz focuses too heavy on what's new, what's hip. Whatever it took to keep the player on a perpetual hamster wheel of content and occasionally drip feeding us new stuff to keep us invested. It's exhausting. It's one of the main reasons why I left and have almost zero investment or passion in this game anymore. I know I'm gonna get stuck on a hamster wheel so I go at my own pace absorbing whatever story I can from the campaign and just drop the whole thing entirely. There is no point in sticking around unless you want to work on the pvp season Vicious Mount or something. It sucks seeing the sorry state that WoW is in right now and I wish it was better.
i started playing in 2020, and if wowhead didn't exist, i might have stopped long ago. the lore is completely elusive to me. I didn't even understand that the forsaken and the scourge were different things until dragonflight was announced, because the content for those factions was obsolete. I would find mogs I wanted, and spend so much time scouring the internet trying to figure out the exact questline I needed to follow, then follow the story until the dungeon which I'd inevitably have to run alone, guessing at the mechanics, or waiting until I was OP to one hit everything…this is definitely not how it was intended to be experienced, but its the only way I can play it. Everyone I know is too busy with endgame content.
Jaina should have died during the siege of Dazar'alor
Wotlk wasnt the "peak" – the peak was reached with end of burning crusade. Wotlk was a pleatue. Everything after was a downfall.
omg a pver .. ick
Good first video, man. Keep it up and you'll for sure be able to make some sort of living from content creation..
Honestly the problem with WoW is that it has too much content. We have the 3 warcraft RTS games, the base game and 9 expansions, each with its own arcs, interwoven with dozens of multi-expansion arcs. The timeline is a complete non-linear shitshow and over half of the important lore is spread out across 50 short stories, 30 novels, a movie and more then 1 hour worth of cinematics. If WoW wants to be accessible again, they should start players out at the start of the most recent arc (similar to how they do it now) while adding a hand full of new expositional quests setting the stage for new players entering that expansion. Even a simple quest that tells the player they're a new recruit being sent to Kul'Tiras for an audience with Jaina Proudmoor a powerful mage and princess, you're mission is to offer her and the people of Kul'Tiras assistance. You really would only need a handful of these per zone in order for players to piece together the rest of the story.
WoWs story has always been disjointed. Even classic, tbc and wotlk required you to have played the RTS games in order to truly appreciate and understand the story. The issue with modern wow and chromie time is the lack of continuity and self contained arcs.
BFA was honestly the most fun I'd had in WoW since 2006. Leveling in BGs from 10-Max. On an OP Disc priest. Was a blast. Then I ran out of shit to do.
I miss WoTLK on a daily basis, it's storyline was incredible to teenage Meoni.
It's absolutely horrifying to see that new players start an expansion and never really see the pay off. Same with the other expansions, but wow, not actually dealing with the threat must feel awful!
Excellent vid!
If wow would do a reboot, i prob would quit.
I cant understand how a completionist and collector like asmon can stick to such an opinion.
The new player experience can be crucial to a game, especially when they introduce content through the story.
I started playing Destiny 2 in 2019, bought it shortly before it went free to play, to join an established group of friends.
The new player experience was not a very useful one, I constantly had to be told which NPC was used for content, I had no introduction to the story and no idea who the NPC's were, why they mattered or where to unlock dungeons/raids.
As a result of this complete disconnect with the game world, when they froze progression for my favorite weapons I stopped playing, as I could no longer play the way I liked and keep up with the content outside of pvp matches.
some players just skip everything, also not many wants to play through the old world quests to get a loremaster
catering to these people is really pointless probably
Pyromancer's theories were incredibly cringe-inducing and I'm so glad he quit. Never forget his immature meltdown
First video?! GG
To me, WoW feels like it's stuck between a sandbox MMO and a story focused MMO, and it doesnt do either very well nowadays due to a lack of commitment to either style
Leveling in retail is a joke
i really dont get why blizz isnt creating a prologue questline, that bridges the story of the old expansion to the new ones. Like a questline thats a couple of hours long, lets you learn the core of your class, explains the story of the previous expansions and then spits you out at the current one with the relevant level. That way new players know the relevant storybits, their class and the core gameplay loop and Blizz could easely just hang another chapter and the end of the questline, everytime a new expansion comes out.
as a gw2 player this is very funny to watch lol
with the new follower dungeons i hope they make a raid variant for older raids for the people that play the game the way you explained
Launch was in 2004 not 2005
