Some visual spoilers are present in the video, so stuff like cutscene excerpts or cool endgame bosses. This is mainly a concern if you’re not at endgame yet yourself and care about not having a boss spoiled for you, so keep that in mind!
I’ve been playing both World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV for quite a while now, and after subbing for Dragonflight I thought it’d be cool to compare my experience as a casual player for both games. Even though its not a 1:1 VS match or video, but I think this video will give you a good overview of both games as a player of one of them, or as someone who’s still deciding which MMO to give a shot first maybe.

Thanks a lot for all the interesting comments! I apologize for not having mentioned stuff like the Palace of the Dead as a leveling alternative, but that's mainly because I haven't engaged with that myself really. I'm glad to see most comments and discussions are very civilized too, I'm pretty humbled this video has been performing so well too haha, thanks everyone 🙂
On the ffxiv racial thing – It’s also due to Japan having a thing against playing as “monstrous” or “inhuman-looking” characters, while Western fantasy has more embraced the idea of playable beast races, demons, etc.
Imagine, being a young kid trying to start a new adventure in WOW… ALL the stuff you HAVE to get to even be considered to be accepted into a raiding guild… Not to mention, trying to get people to give a shit about you, rather than kicking you the instant you say "Hello, I'm new here!" What? You don't have DBM with the current raid info patched into it? What, you don't have a mod that tells you what your allies cooldown timers are at? What!? You don't have a mod that lets you clean up your UI so you can see the boss arena better? Git gud n00b!
Great video and mixing rhe music in from the games made for nice background listening while i work.
I wanna add in my own thoughts to this. I played wow for a long time from wrath to shadowlands, roughly 10 years. And i joined ffxiv same time as you. During the big wow exodus and asmongold times.
There are few things i miss from wow. One of the biggest is the transmog system. It is so incredibly janky in comparison in ffxiv. The auto cataloguing just blows out the glamour system. However the looks of ffxiv i enjoy much more. The race diversity of wow i miss as well. I wouldnt narrow it down as simple as human, short human, tall human like you and many others do. But i definitely miss the variety. And i miss the feel of the classes. They had a flow to their combat that felt more rewarding to me. Housing is a weird thing. I hate how wow handled it with garrisons, but at least everybody was able to get one. In ffxiv the options are so vast its great and people have made amazong homes. But it is so hard to get a house its ridiculous.
Almost everything else i dont miss or like better in ffxiv. Obviously sinking 10 years in a game leaves me missing it so i never assume ill be gone for good.
The community of both games ive come across toxic people. Biggest difference is in wow toxic negativity and ffxiv toxic positivity. Though negative encounters were much much more common in wow.
I feel ffxiv is my main mmo now. Ill try wow again one day, i hear dragonflight is actually good so maybe at the end of its lifespan ill try it. But i dont feel any big pull to wow anymore, its a weird feeling.
On the topic of the community, yea, I've always found it incredibly welcoming. Personally, I started the game to be able to tease a friend about their NPC crush, and ended up being the clown as the story immediately snagged all of my attention and absorbed me. I was also absolutely and utterly TERRIFIED of people. Social anxiety and all that. I was bad to the point that I begged said friend to do the first required dungeon with me, which ended up with her plowing through with an overleveled character. When I got the courage to do dungeons standard with other people… FFXIV helped my social anxiety so much. I'm still far more of a solo player, but I'm also happy to interact with other players and help new players and just fuck around. It really is great.
Late to the video, but as someone who played WoW since the start of TBC and played and loves Warcraft, I can say that I have now completely given up WoW in favor of FFXIV. I love lore, but the lore in WoW has become so bad and doesn’t make sense, in FFXIV even glamour and the way it works is somewhat lore consistent and throughout the game you see it used in different ways. I also raided mythic (in a more casual way), and I always disliked the fact that I need to look at all the guides, have all the addons and WeakAura’s set up. FFXIV showed me that I can do difficult and amazing raids, without going through all the extra steps and having these extra things installed. It is just so much better in my opinion and makes it easier for those who want to give harder content a try to actually try it. Now, on the topic of addons, I do think UI addons are fun and I think addons in general should be optional and not required (I know they are not required, but they basically are for high end content in WoW).
I’d say ffxiv is better than dragon flight, but when wow is at its peak such a wrath of the lich king or mists of pandaria it’s better than ffxiv.
FF14 story is what made me quit. The worst beginning and middle of any story ever written makes the story a bad one.
How dare you not like Fiesta online, the jellybeans are disappointed 😛
In 14 you can tweak your gear by melding materia to it. As a BLM my goal was to rush my casts so I could fit more spells into one rotation. Other BLMs would go for more power so on.
Once you play FF XIV it’s not possible to go back on WoW
my experience with the two:
I typically play games with my brother and when we tried to play final fantasy together, we found there to be an insane amount of scenarios and stuff that you are forced to solo. that really kills the multiplayer leveling experience for us
world of warcraft on the other hand doesnt have anything in the way of grouping up except for certain class/race starting areas that prevent you from grouping for the first few levels
basically what im saying is, if you are a dev making a multiplayer game PLEASE make the multiplayer actually let you play with multiple players
ff14 just wow but in anime
Customisation on mmo is an illusion of choice, I'm pretty sure WoW has meta build that everyone use
45:07 I saw that camera tilt
Id like to add a motion for Titties ….would any one like to second ?
I'm playing FF14 but thinking of jumping to WOW
I have reason maybe like stupid ,
I'm deaf , in wow raids or whatever higher than hc , require and force you to enter discord server or group to play ,
second wow not support new player , if you are new player stay with real friends will teach you "
otherwise no one will invite you ,
main reason , I'm deaf , ffxiv, I can play alone Without relying on other players
WoWs new player experience is basically just a tutorial and doesn't really give you an idea of what the game is. And it has so many confusing things that can be overwhelming. More systems doesn't make a better game lol. It's just unnecessary. It's story is alright but nothing amazing. And the NPC animations can look ridiculous.
FFXIV has a ton of FTP content offering 2 complete expansions for free. It has a ton of content and it's all fairly easy to understand. Even each class type has its own mini story. 1 thing with FFXIV is looting isn't as fun as wow. The game is more about leveling and the story.
As wow feels more like it's about gaining wealth and power. In FFXIV you can always obtain best in slot fairly easily. For some this is a deal breaker but for others who don't like grinding for rares it's a plus.
Something import to mention about wow's alts is that it is very easy to get to max level, but keeping up with all weeklies required to have a raid ready alt can be a nightmare. The epitome was during shadowlands and the soul crushing legendaries
The style and graphics of FFXIV is literally what made me stop play the game. It feels so dull, and even with GShade i just got a bored feeling, idk. Im not a fan of semi-realism, as it gets dated quickly and shows strongly in FFXIV especially in environments. Some areas made my eyes hurt actually. On top, the gameplay/combat is actually not as fluid as WoW – and coming from WoW that was very frustrating. I didnt like WoWs direction anymore so i wanted to like FFXIV very much, I gave it 3 tries with increasingly more time every time. But i just didn't get why its so popular, its a matter of taste i guess. Im a big fan of japanese culture and anime etc., so its not because its an "east asian game". Its also extremely restrictive, like a job ("class") is tied to a weapon type. I didnt like that at all, not one bit. Want to be a warrior with a sword? Too bad, you only get an axe… EVER. FFXIVs system is better for balance, but balance is not what makes games fun – at least not MMOs. Also another issue i had with FFXIV combat system, aside from its relatively poor responsiveness, is that the design choice of long chains (often combined with button bloat) over small core rotations or proc/priority based combat. I played WW monk, one of the classes with highest amount of buttons in WoW, and switching to FFXIV i simply ran out of keybindings. Too much button bloat. I could go on, but i guess theres no point. Im glad people have something they can enjoy.
I'm glad that so many people enjoy ff14 story, for me it felt like watching a mashup of Cartoon Network and Disney Channel(that's how Dragonflight felt for me as well). The MSQ has too many cutscenes and when I see the pixelated hair of Zero, I lose the little immersion that was left. The only part I've truly enjoyed was Shadowbringers(vibe and story). Let's hope they come with some new features with Dawnbringer, and not the same old scenario refurbished. Very high quality video, grats!
A problem with entering dungeons in WoW is that it was either a drag to have to walk to the dungeon in the old days, or now with the Party Finder there is no immersion or sense of dungeons having a place in the world. So with FF14 I thought it was quite smart that you DO have to physically go to the dungeon once to unlock it, so you know where it is, what it looks like, what's its lore, and afterwards you can queue through FF14's equivalent of Party Finder.
Thanks for letting us know that you like horse futa I guess.
Dude. I'm only halfway through this video and I'm really enjoying it.
He started playing wow right after the final good expansion.
Wow classic > ff xiv
You should try ESO
Really good synopsis of both games 🙂
7:12 depending on your faction, the dialogs change a bit. If you pick the immortal flames, during some cinematics (not voiced) Rauban and npcs refer to your character as your current rank in the immortal flames, this also happen in some quest dialogs further in storm blood quests!
7:24 this "customization" usually ends in the same set of talents when you start raiding and there are things that you must have or your dps is shit. :/
11:17 you do get job specific quests until you reach shadow bringers, from there, it is role (healer, tank, melee dps, phisical ranged and magic ranged) quests
What I like about WoW better than FF14 is the world content. You see so many people doing world events in the most recent expansion zones. Not to mention the world actually feels like a world with dynamic enemies and npcs in a open world.
But is WoW one of the biggest MMOs today? Ten years ago I would've said yes, but now? I suspect GW2 and EvE Online have more players now.
WoW, great game, trash community.
