This is my DCS teaching setup and PC Specs. You do NOT need a computer like mine to get into DCS, check the min specs in the vid!

DCS is free, we use Open Beat 2.7 downloadable here…

Personally I don’t use Steam for DCS.

You will need F-5E and Nevada to start in the school (subscribe to Discipulus) or just any of the free aircraft that come with the game if you join Experientia.

  1. I was watching pre DCS days….. Its incredible what you've set up in the last 18 months or so. If you were told the day after leaving the RAF that you'd be training a global community of flight sim 'gamers', what would have been your response?

  2. I ran VR (Quest 2) on a 980 4GB. Worked well on a slightly lowered resolution on the HMD but still more than enough to do everything. Occasionally struggled with pod work due to lowered resolution but I bought HMD zoom and that solved the issues.

  3. Interested in finding out more on OpenXR v SteamVR. I'm on a Ryzen 53600x, 3070ti, 32gb, and all "hds" are either SSD or m.2. Oculus Q2 on DCS I'm finding a bit flakey…. Otherwise DCS runs smooth as butter out of VR. Of course, and I know this isn't the same, VTOL VR is a fun, immersive, initial challenge – and did like your content on that.
Me, I was a wanna-be pilot back in the 1980's, but never came to fruition – proud of family links and being able to tour the likes of Cranwell, Wyton, Lossiemouth, Buchan, Machrihanish etc.

  4. Rmax and myself have to be the closest together out of the school looking at the map. I'm thinking that may it may mean between us both that lag will be non existent so when the F15E finally comes out if he's up for some two seat action.

  5. The one thing you didn't tell us about – what's that bell for on the desk? 😀

I'm an Arma3 guy myself, but do prefer the TrackIR setup. Considering getting into MSFS or DCS, either VR or TrackIR – hence my interest in the video.

  6. CPU: i7-9700K
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 (2x8GB, 2x)
GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Armor 8G

    SSD: Crucial Mx500 2,5"1TB (2x)

Also have a Reverb G2 and I think (top of my head) everything runs on ultra without the goggles. Lovely game. Hope to be going back to school soon!

  7. Impressive all round Tim, especially the training modules. I like what you say about the social conditioning or, as I know it, muscle memory gained from repeated practice. I only wish something like this was available when I was starting out, way better than all those hours in wet and windy VGS hangars waiting for the right weather! Being able to learn and repeat the lessons in DCS or even MSFS20 must be a huge help in developing flying skills. I only dabble with DCS but I'll certainly recommend your channel and courses to those thinking about a flying career.

  8. Started out in DCS during the first lockdown, and built my system for this purpose (some components gradually over time as they became available).

M/B ASUS ROG Strix X570-F Gaming

    CPU: AMD 5800x (OC 4.8GHz)

    RAM 64GB 3600MHz

    GFX NVIDA RTX 3070 8GB GDDR6

SSD 1* Samsung PRO 980 2TB (for DCS ;-)) & several Samsung 850 EVO 1TB's (for other games and software)

OS Windows 10 Pro (Latest OS patches)
HOTAS Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS (Joystick & Throttle), VKB Pedals (v4) + TM MFD w/CUBESIM (x2) & PointCTRL (fantastic)
VR HP Reverb G2 (use this for DCS – also using OpenXR) & Oculus Quest 2 (also have TrackIR5, not using)

    Monitor iiYama G-Master GB3466WQSU (3440×1400)

This works well for me, but it hasn't been without trials and tribulations along the way to get it to a point where its actually very good.
If I were to build another system today, I would go back down the Intel route.

    Regards,
    Paul (Dodge / LondonLad)

  9. I was an ED Tester for the Blackshark and A10C Tim – pretty much left it all behind around 2013 just before retiring so i could focus on transition to civ-div. Used to be a VIP at Duxford, knew Jim Mac well, Cizh and Dmitry, Wags, the Grey's etc. Infact…………….. think i'm still under NDA – lol! I also used to run the 74th VFS The Flying Tigers which was run pretty much the same way as Shadowlands but clearly under an Army Regimented system – the guys loved it, the structure etc. It was unapologetically 'eliteist'. It faded to grey after leaving DCS world as I've mentioned to focus on transition. Nowadays, I fly with my son, a couple of mates every now n then etc. I may well join you for some Friday night action. Take care. O7

  10. Unfortunately I don’t have a PC as I’ve just returned to the UK from Saudi. After flying on DCS for a good 14 years or so with GR & others I’d very much like to learn a bit more about how to operate the jets in a realistic manner. As soon as I get a PC next year I’ll be looking you up. Enjoy the videos. You need to stop looking in the mirror & make some more. Keep up the good work.
