World of Warcraft has lasted 20 years in a world where other AAAA games barely make it a month, so in this video I explore why that is.

World of Warcraft has been going for 20 years since it released all the way back in November 2004, but how is that possible? When newer AAAA games like Skull & Bones barely last a week, or games like Concord that have million of dollars barely make it a day, how is World of Warcraft able to last as long as it has? In this video I go through every major expansion in World of Warcraft history like Wrath of the Lich King, Burning Crusade, and even the worst ones like Battle for Azeroth to find out how exactly World of Warcraft became an unstoppable force.

Happy 20 years of World of Warcraft, that's an insane achievement!
To watch How Call of Duty Became Unstoppable next https://youtu.be/AdxOP9uPj6A
Best MMORPG i have ever played and i tried most of the good ones. Nothing even comes close to WoW, other games seem empty and sad compared to it, communities are also trashy and gatekeeping, but in WoW i still find a little dose of connectivity with others. Last one I played was New World….. my god was that bad, the only good thing I can say about it was the graphics, everything else was total trash starting with the community, before that I tried Lost Ark… incredible trash of a game, nice boss mechanics, and thats about it. Playing Lotro on the legendary servers now, its not bad but it doesnt really scratch an ich, lonely solo mmo again. WoWs popularity is its curse, we will never get WoW 2 since the 1st one is still making a lot of money.
Lol @ the first 20 seconds was like a whos who of douchebag wow critics nice work.
Did he totally skip dragon flight? 🤣 don’t blame him
this game is absolutely atrocious, complete stinker of a game, people are just chasing their first hit of crack, the only people playing this game are either extremely depressed or they're playing it as a job
This made me cry.
I nearly cried at the end of the video.
‘Wow is dead” – washed up classic Andy streamer who gets everything handed to him and then complains there’s nothing to do
you should do this for runescape also lol nice video!
The reason why wow worked up until wod more or less was ANTICIPATION.
OG WoW worked because of novelty. BC because of the anticipation of Illidan. Wotlk because of anticipation of Arthas.
Cataclysm weakly because of aspects and death wing. Mop which didn't start well but then got good because of the anticipation generated by story. Wod because of the old horde clans. Legion because of the anticipation of legion.
And this is where the anticipation stopped. The story hereafter just felt an impulsive haphazard extension.
Now all the dips in form were due to the hindrances made by corporate greed and game play bs
Bfa was supposed to be good since we were going to the tried and tested old feel, but then strayed away from the plot.
SL was SHIT. SL did exactly opposite of what worked. IT KILLED ANTICIPATION
You make contemporary corporate-studio documentaries look and sound utterly amateur.
Great videos.
Dude make more videos
2019 classic was so damn fun until it became glaringly obvious Blizzard gave ZERO effort in banning bots. It took like a month or two to get bad. Then by November/December it was awful. It was over for me at that point. There was no going back to 2004-2007 when maybe only a few hundred people per server knew what the heck they were actually doing or how to properly gear and play their class. The sheer amount of playstyles and random people just there to mess around and explore was wild. Now everyone just knows exactly what the meta is, where to farm, what quests/dungeons to skip or do its pretty lame.
I've been playing since Burning Crusade and took time off work every launch to experience that initial wave of players rushing the new zones and systems. It's a unique period in WoW's 2-year lifecycle where people are way more chill, optimism is through the roof, and excitement is unmatched. I lack the words to describe my sentiment after WoW charged for launch night ("early access" on a $15/mo+$50 paid game) for The War Within.
i got hooked with wow since vanilla. until today, i still have struggles with other mmo not becuse they are bad or anything. its just that, only wow gave me that kind of hunter class. the one that tame beast and bond with them. no where else i felt that kind of class fantasy. this is why i kept returning to it, just to play the hunter class. most other games only offer a ranger/archer fantasy, not the hunter that bonded with his companion beast.
Not me currently playing an emulated Everquest 1999 server…
I came back to WoW after a 4-year break, and I'm really enjoying it. We might leave for an expansion or two, but Azeroth is always our home
20 years down, and here's to another 20. If you're ready for the 20th anniversary Blackrock Depths Raid give me a hell yea!
That's why we're heading into WWIII! It'll become a World of War(craft)! Stop playing it! Too many people spending money on worthless things while the world is dying!
To be honest, if they didnt make some changes along, I would have stopped playing. Yes some of the changes was bad, but some of them was good. I was playing Wrath of the lich king classic abit (cleared naxx), but yeah I really enjoy war within, and I really starting to find out how I wanna play so I will not get burn out (I have been close to that many times). I am not hardcore raid or M+, but I do some delves t8 (planning on do t11 at one point), I do current content on one character, then I farm transmog for sale on another, then I do old mats farm on another character then I farm old raids on what character I feel like playing (got 14 level 80, one of each class and one of each race on horde side). I do pet battles (pokemon) on the character I feel like playing at that time. I have even thinking giving pvp a change on a character. So yeah for me I shall do some different things on different characters and not do the same thing over and over again on all my characters, just like I red on a youtube comment, that player needed (he said he needed it), to do 8 t8 deleves on 14 (or how many it was) characters, but at the same time he didnt want to do.
Honestly it's good quality but what made it king is that it's the only game where blatant cheats are considered must have add-ons. So players with zero interest in learning a game and practice can see and finish every content. And the community evolved. The players that would not allow any kind of that in other games are defending cheats with an insane attitude. Even forcing players to have them or they could not join. Even if 90% of all boss fights are "don't stay in something on the ground". They did not learn that
u are soo wrong. u dont understand how this planet works.
1. ppl needs distraction from her worklife then it sucks so we need a illusion
2. when u invest time in a game u dont start a new one an 30 cent a day its not that expensive specially when u work
3. over the time u became good player so why starting a new game even when is 4 free
that had nothing to do with blizzard activision or Ms look what these campany does its ridicoules and player still playing
I wonder if this video will go over content creators like MadSeasonwow. Probably not.
Keep in mind a lot of the devs for WoW actually had played Everquest. Alex Afrasiabi infamously wrote a very scathing post about a raid encounter they'd added… and then Ion Hazzikostas did the exact same with the C'thun fight in vanilla WoW lol.
Please, make it stop
17:21 Except that MoP was AMAZING, it took a little bit for some people to realize that.
I love that Mila Kunis’s agent had to login to talk to her 😂
Spend many years playing, Leave and always find my way back into it, after all these years, from 2007 to now, its a fun game, theres something about that makes you feel that exhilarating adrenaline
mists of pandaria is unironically my favourite expansion and pandaren are my favourite race to pick and… you guessed it… monk is my favourite class aswell lmao.
the only thing i didnt like in mop were these artificial slow downs in the dungeons (defend the wall, etc) so it prevents you from rushing through them within 5 minutes.
damn, the music was even the best in my opinion. just the whole asian vibe was so nice.
most of mops changes and additions were unexpected but surprisingly welcome (except for the cash mounts and character boost)
WoW is still dying last 20 years , for SURE 😀
Casuals are the cancer of this game. Pay our sub and stop complaining
I have and/or will never play WoW and I do not understand most of the concepts that you talk about in this video, but I enjoyed watching it. And now I am watching it again to see if I can understand it better. Cheers Canadian…sorry, Zenkai Goose!
Not Halo, Runescape did the exact same thing in arguably a better way. RuneScape classic is 2006/7 runescape I believe and it's bigger than modern runescape (RS3)
That is a great video! Thank you! I love how Blizzard now seems to be just breathing (heartbeat scene with logo). They are cooking. Whatever they are doing now at least it feels like they are working harder.
5 grand for 20 years of fun. It was worth it. Go play golf for 20 years…
GOOD VIDEO
Goose your videos are fantastic man, so well written, so well thought out and articulated. Keep up the awesome work, its always a great day when I have a goose video to watch. Thanks. Have a goosetastic day.
WoW relies on customer retention rather than attraction of new players.
So basically 90% of their current audience played WoW long time ago and now continue playing after some breaks.
If WoW was released today as a brand new game it would be dead soon like most of modern MMORPGs on the the market.
I am a WoW refugee and fled to Final Fantasy XIV, I am never looking back
20:16 i knew a lot of people back then which wanted to play Pandas…
