  2. The launch and rollout of Warlords of Draenor nearly scuttled the entire franchise. The end of Mists of Pandaria was a cliffhanger, with the Horde rebelling against Garrosh's genocidal conquest of Azeroth and him being arrested to stand trial. The trial, however, was not depicted in the game but rather in a separate novel people had to buy to see the true end of the expansion. But the novel also shows the plans of several other characters only hinted at in the game's events come to fruition, as they break Garrosh out of prison and send him back in time to before the events of the first RTS game ever occur (the 35 years ago bit). Unless you were one of the players who kept up with everything outside the game, when the trailer announcing Warlords came on and you see Garrosh reveal his face and toss his dad his axe, you had no idea how or why this alternate timeline you were going to play through even happened.

Then, when the game launched, it was plagued by technical issues (server crashes, massive login wait times, account errors, etc), incomplete or absent content advertised in its announcement, and negative response to mechanics central to the expansion's gameplay. They ended up cutting entire patches wroth of content that left multiple quest storylines unresolved or unexplained, putting all that cut time and effort into the next expansion so make sure the game that kept the studio thriving didn't fizzle out on the biggest mess in the game's history.

Mists of Pandaria was also the beginning of a new direction for World of Warcraft, because all subsequent expansions would be the result of events from the previous one. Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, and Cataclysm were mostly self-contained stories that referenced past events, but from Mists onward it would be a continuous saga beginning right where the last one left off. This approach has continued to this very day and will be the direction until the last announced expansion releases in 2026/2028.

  3. It's funny that you keep mentioning the Warcraft movie because the Warlords of Draenor cinematic are the events of the beginning of the Warcraft movie when the orcs go through the giant green gate except that they betray Gul'dan (the evil caster orc in the movie) because an orc that never went through the portal, Garrosh, went back in time to warn them against drinking Demon Blood and turning green and crazy.

  5. someone else may have said but iv not seen but the wod cinematic is an alternate timeline the orcs in the main timeline drank the blood of manaroth ( the big guy with the wings) for more power, which also turned their skin green due to corruption and the main orc grommash killed manaroth and freed them from the control while also dying in the process by getting hit by the explosion that garrosh (the bald hooded one) saved him from. TLDR its wow alternate/time travel. the bro saving his bro was actually the son saving his alternate timeline father.

  6. The Warcraft Pandaren as a concept technically pre-dates Kung fu Panda. Although it wasn't a serious lore fixture until the World of Warcraft Expansion Mists of Pandaria. Which is why people were so harsh on the expansion. In hindsight most players agree the expansion was actually one of the most beloved and well thought out and paced ones.

One my favorite raids Throne of Thunder is in that expansion, the buildup and storyline for it are just so well done, tied into the quests and the lore of the area, brings in a race of trolls we hadn't heard from in a few expansions, had interesting encounters and mechanics. Just everything leading up to throne of thunder for me was 10/10, hasn't been done as well since.

  7. So, you do need a bit of context for the Warlords of Draenor cinematic. This is an altered timeline. 35 years ago, the Orcs originally drank the blood of Mannoroth (the big demon, his blood was the green liquid). Grom Hellscream (the orc who yelled "we will never be slaves") was the first orc to drink the blood back then. This made the orcs stronger but caused them to have an insatiable bloodlust. It also tied them to Mannoroth and kind of made them into slaves to him and the bloodlust. Years later, during the events of the game Warcraft 3, Grom faced off against Mannoroth and was able to kill him which freed the orcs.

Now, the orc who said "times change" in this cinematic, is an orc named Garrosh Hellscream (yes, that is Grom's son). He had become warchief of the horde, but was overthrown in the events of Mists of Pandaria. He escaped and managed to go back in time 35 years, which then lead to this cinematic.

Also that gateway at the end (when Grom says "but we will be conquerors"), that structure is the Dark Portal, the same one from the Warcraft movie and the same portal from the beginning of the Burning Crusade cinematic. It connects Draenor (the home world of the Orcs) to Azeroth.

  10. So basically a quick explanation about both expansions:

In MoP the Pandaria continent was discovered and the story develops with some hatred demons destroying the continent ot something like that and of course the "bad boss" from the expansion tried to use them but failed and was put in imprisonment.

As a result, some random Time Traveler dragon sended Garrosh (the bad boss who is the bald orc with the hood in the WoD video) to the past where he met his father and consequently made the Orcs refuse the "gift" (dark magic which makes them stronger but easier for the demons to control them) from the demons and basically didn't turned green-skinned in that timeline which is actually a pocket dimension.

I think I didn't left anything of great relevance.

  11. the orc with the hair is the father of the bald orc. the bald orc time travled in the end of mists of pandaria to draenor and stop his father from drinking the demon blood which turned the orcs to green crazy blood lust monsters. also he saved him from manaroth explosion after he killed him with that axe to the head. that is also refrense to warcraft 3 mini cinimatic where u see the same thing. where he strikes the demon with the axe and the explosion kills him since there was no1 to push him out of the explosion. warcraft 3 is the original time line and draenor cinematic shows u a branch in the time line where grom hellscream didnt die.

  12. The Pandaren were introduced to the Warcraft universe in 2002, but were mostly easter-eggs and side jokes at the time. Kung Fu Panda released in 2008. Mists of Pandaria, which was when we were finally given more of the Pandaren than little references and jokes, was in 2012. So I think there was a fair amount of inspiration going back and forth between the two.

  13. Grom Hellscream was one of the first orcs to invade Azeroth. They were enslaved after drinking the blood of Mannoroth (the big ass winged demon they fight). After the wars Grom eventually partners with Thrall and they go fight Mannoroth in the third game. During that fight Grom lands a killing blow but Mannoroth detonates resulting in his death. Thrall eventually hands over the Horde to his son Garrosh which could be best described as Stalin/Hitler-esque. In Warlords of Draenor they go back into the past to change time but still leads the Orcish horde to invade Azeroth.

It's important to note that the Orc and Draenei homeworld of Draenor got almost completely obliterated in the first two games. The first WoW expansion takes place in it's remains and you meet some of the characters who were trapped there.

  14. The warcraft pandas were in the original RTS games, mostly as a joke and not as fleshed out but they existed before kung fu panda

Some of the specifics and new lore added in mists are clearly inspired by the movie tho.

I remember a ton of negativity about the expansion at the time because of it being so light hearted and people thinking "kung fu pandas" were dumb. It's sort of funny as its one of the most loved expansions in hindsight (my personal favorite because the pvp gameplay was at its best imo) and the story was actually surprisingly dark (with a lot of warcrimes) despite the warm and almost comical exterior. Also the landscapes are undeniably beautiful even if I do like northrend more personally

Warlords of draenor is a time travel/AU which makes it really confusing lore wise especially to those who arent super familiar with the lore to begin with, a lot of fan service for fans of the old RTS games, the ending with the demon exploding is pretty much frame for frame taken from the WC3 orc campaign cinematic, except he dies there instead of being saved by his son (who went back in time). The Lords of War shorts are a different style but its super cool and badass showing the backstory of some of the characters in this expansion

The expansion is universally considered one of the worst times for the game sadly, a lot of potential but it was just basically left unfinished. You're right that there are good and bad orcs, but those are the og orcs that go bad (but in this alternate timeline they dont drink the demon blood…they just go bad on their own lmao)

  15. Kung Fu Panda came first, but only by months, but Chen Stormstout (the Panda) first debut in early 2000, with Warcraft 3, as he was a secret character in one of the campaigns. and btw Chen is especially chill, he likes to take his time, relax and most of all drink Beer.

  16. @GOTgames the panda in this is CHen Stormwtout, a character from the original RTs Warcraft games, and one of the beings who helped found the Orc nation of Durotar (where the capital is), so he long predates Po.

  17. Warlords of Draenor was the second worst expansion but it has the second best cinematic if you have the context, that scene when Grom(the long hair orc)is about to get burned in the explosion of Mannoroth(the big demon)dying is the exact same of the cinematic from 2002 but this time his son from another timeline saves him from dying.

  18. you should watch the video that follows the Mists of Pandaria trailer. The human and the orc end up together in a bar and talk about their encounter with the panda.
    It's hilarious ๐Ÿ˜‚
    Video's title is "Bottoms up"

  19. Funny enough between these 2 expansions, Mists of Pandaria's cinematic, while not terrible isn't very good. But the actual expansion was absolutely loved.
Warlords of Draenor was the completely opposite story. Amazing cinematic but it went down as one of the worst expansions in WoW's history.
