  1. Dodger not knowing about the shitstorm happening at Blizzard feels like someone just woke up from a coma and telling them we just got out of a multiple year long pandemic.

  2. Dodger's reaction was so genuine here, it's a level of shocked and repulsed and uncomfortable that only really comes from hearing this news for the first time and not just the latest in a long string of controversies.

  3. Loved Josh on the podcast but I personally would have liked more personal banter and less philosophical debates about video game design. Dodger kinda looked left out during most of the discussions.

  4. The thing people rarely discuss about why wow players such as my self go back is simply…. Combat. Compared to FF14 (great for story and I have done end game there) , GW2 (great if you like to float) , Elder Scrolls (for me a disappointment that I waited for and could just not get into) combat is simply more fluid. It's faster paced. It requires you to be attentive to pull most rotations off properly. Mythics and high end raiding provide a solid challenge that is still accessible to most who can put some time in. That is just my opinion though and I've played the aforementioned games. I also did play Rift at launch and loved it. I played it for about a year at launch and went back later but by then it was quite dead. Played Wildstar as well and the combat was pretty good but the vibe wasn't for me. Prefer a more high fantasy setting.

  5. Wildstar absolutely committed seppuku with it's dedication to "classic" (i.e. unbelievably grindy) play patterns. They made this fun, cartoony SF game with some action elements in the combat…and then made players grind for a dozen or more hours just to access endgame content. Might have died anyway, but preventing the majority of players from seeing the majority of content assured their failure.

  6. "Don't use the gold standard as a benchmark, use Neverwinter Nights instead."

Why on earth would I ignore the most archetypical MMORPG on the market if I was trying to build an MMORPG? This advice is not just counterintuitive, it's actively harmful. Iteration is essential in a business as creative as video game design. Video game developers depend more on the "Shoulders of Giants" paradigm than filmmakers ffs.

  7. This is a surreal 2012 meets 2024 vision that Im absolutely all for. Throw Crendor, Husky, Jace Hall, Nyhm, and (RiP) Total Biscuit in the mix, borrow a stogy and whiskey from Oxhorn, and relive the the No Life (Kripp) ways. Massive nostalgia bomb hosted by one of my CURRENT favourites? /swoon

  8. Windstar was unoptimized. It was crap performance and they tried to force everyone to play in tight fights that their engine couldn't handle. So sad, because I loved the ideas they had. They just couldn't be assed to make their game play smoothe before they tried to put in the hard mode.

  9. I'll be honest, you bring similar energy that Total Biscuit used to bring to the chaos that is Jessie Cox and Dodger duo. It's like I'm back at TGS podcast days.

  10. I mean Blizzard can still produce good, polished games; the problems are the systems they put in place in those games. Like even Overwatch is a very polished and fun game, but there is like nothing you can earn for free and everything is a microtransaction. Fine for hardcore players, but not for people who just want to play for fun.

  11. I liked a lot about Wildstar, but it was an extreme grind to the level cap where you could do the actually interesting/difficult content (raids). I pushed through to like level 30 before I just couldn't do the leveling anymore and gave up.

  12. Just seeing Dodger, Jesse Cox, and Josh on a podcast together made my day. Also, what a blast of nostalgia, too. I had no idea that Dodger and Jesse Cox were still active in the gaming industry, so I'm glad to have a new podcast to listen to!
