I would try diablo imortals but i dont see it be long term game.
The thing that worries me the most going forward, is that we all know Activision-Blizzard's intentions, they've been public and upfront about it. They have Call of Duty and Candy Crush Saga, and said that they wanted to bring WoW more in-line with their top earners. AND we also know that Shadowlands has broken pre-order records, and more people are currently playing video games (a lot in part due to Covid) than ever before. So IF WoW still isn't up to that level with a subscription model and full priced expansions then what can they do?
I mean, the ethical "normal" response would be by trying to grow the player count (and monthly subscriptions they bring) by making the game something that people would want to play and enticing more people to play, whether new or returning customers. Maybe a good ad campaign.
So… battle passes anyone?

Just to be clear here:
– Previous Quarter results showed 32M MAUs now its 30M MAUs on World of Warcraft product, that doesn't mean Shadowlands, that means Retail wow and Classic Wow. -2M growth, yes, negative Monthly Active Users growth for a MMORPG title that envolves 2 games, retail version and Classic version.
– "Franchise engagement" Lets translate it to something less ambiguous: Ammount of ppl spending hours/day on the game. That is a way to extract more money from China because chinese players pay the game by hours played and not monthly fee like the rest of us, so even the TOTAL Population suffered a loss of 2 Million players, the "engagement" meaning china's money, increased because the remaining ppl are playing more hours per day than before.
– "Anticipation continues to build for Shadowlands, ahead of its November 23rd Launch." That is an obvious one if no one else noticed: Shadowlands has been announced for quite some time now and was delayed too, so pre-purchases were accounted for all this time (remember companies doesn't account refunds, if you bought and refunded, company will only announce the purchase). Which means, the more they delay Shadowlands, the more this metric factor will grow.
Shadowlands "tops Records" is just because it was delayed and the expansion is the most expensive ever on wow's history. That's why. Don't be delusional thinking it brought new ppl because it didn't. Instead it spooked 2Million players away.

I’m new to wow waiting till Black Friday to maybe get a subscription on sale, do I have to buy shadowlands or will I get lots of content as a beginner with out buying shadowlands? I have also never played classic

IMO Apex Legends is better than Warzone but that is mainly because the movement and terrain traversal is so scuffed in WZ. Both excellent games for different reasons.

when you said retail was a single-player game I then remembered why I will not be updating my sub because its not even an MMO anymore
I am playing Retail at the moment, it's more about farming a few mounts and outfits (I didn't play seriously since classic/vanilla back in the days, just leveled and quit again every expension, so a lot of stuff to farm and do), more like a time-kill single player game now, and I'll look at Shadowlands and see if I like the extension (I dabbled a bit in Legion which I didn't find that bad actually). I'm a bit scared if they don't introduce too many systems, could turn out just fine, could be a piece of sh***. Not being that serious about it I fear I'll do wrong choices, but I doubt that will matter a lot to me.
They should just make a new Lost Viking game. Create a new universe for it. A completely new IP, which they need. Diablo is dead until/IF they make 4, Starcraft is dead for content. HotS development was cut in half. All they have as active IP is Warcraft and Overwatch.
